It's meaningless to add $2 to the $27. $2 is received
and $27 is paid.
Total paid is $27
Total received is $25 + $2 = $27

After returns from owner they paid: 3x $9=$27 The balance of $3
they have themselves so: $27+$3=$30
After paying the waiter $2 of their $27 they now have $25 + the refund from owner 25+3=$28. The waiter have the remaining $2.

You have 2 equations. Paid 30, got 3 returned. 30-3=27
Owner has 25, waiter has 2. 25+2=27.
There is no extra dollar.
3x9 = 27. Minus (not plus as you stated) the 2 for the waiter, and you have 25.

Okay they paid $30 for the pizza and was given $5 back. So the pizza costed $25. They each got a $1 back so altogether that's $28. And the gave the waiter $2. So that's $30. I figured it out!!! I'm sweet!!!

This has been discussed a million times.
The answer is, there's no reason why
what they paid (3*9$) + the tip (2$)
should equal the amount they initially gave (3*10$) !
(note that the tip is already counted in what they paid, so the 27+2 is a meaningless quantity).
It's just the fact that 29 is almost 30 that's confusing.
What is true is that what they paid (3*9$)
equals the price of pizza + tip (25+2$).

Adding $27 and $2 is foolish.
$27 is what they spent, out of which $2 were given to the waitor. The remaining $25 dollars for pizza. You should find the difference of 27 & 2 to find the price of pizza. Why do you do add them. $2 is included in their expenditure $27(in total).
Their expenditure is $25 for pizza and $2 for waitor, totally $27.
Initially each has $10.
Now each spent $9.
Now each has $1 at hand.
Initially the total amount=3*$10=30.
After, buying pizza,
Total amout=expenditure+balance at hand.
=$27+$3(at hand)
=$30
Tallied. OK?

The answer is, that since the final amount is $25. not $30., you need to add (or subtract!) things to that amount, NOT the original $30...
In other words, 3 x 9 = 27, minus the $2.00 for the waiter, $25.00
Old story!

Trick question if 5 dollars was refunded then the pizza only cost 25 dollars. 2 dollars of that 27 dollars plus your missing dollar is in the pockets of the people buying the pizza.

well the trick is you can't take 3 x $9.00 because they did not pay $9 each in the first place. remember that the store owner returned them $5? that means the bill of $25 would be shared amongst the 3 of them. Hence the bill would be $8.3333 for each person and not $9.
