I currently own a webpage design business and help numerous businesses on their websites, I notice that the websites I help design some are ranked quite high on search engines, I notice the rankings will go back and forth, question is if I loose rankings on a particular business that I am helping out on a website but then they loose their rankings, am I to blame? I almost feel that there is times when theres no control over where the rankings are, a way I can have control over that?

You have some control but not complete control.

Optimizing a website for the search engines is in two logical parts; on-page optimization and off-page optimization.

On-page is everything that is done on the website's pages to improve search engine rankings and off-page is everything else, like obtaining inbound links for example.

As a web designer you can control on-page factors but not off-page factors.

Very few designers know even the basics of search engine optimization and if you were to study it for a while your clients will benefit substantially and hence so will your business

search engines like yahoo need to be able to follow internal links. in making that happen, work with tags, text links, image links, in addition to css menus. bumblebees have difficulty with javascript menus, pop-up panes, drop-down menus, together with flash navigation.
