Of the big manufacturers, the Frontera was considered the worst of its kind - reliability and actual off road ability were not its strong points. Not all 4x4 are awful, though - indeed some are quite comfortable and actually do perform all right off road. The real question is, why any body other than farmers and similar, and emergency services really require them. Where I live, I doubt if any of them has even been on a grass verge, let alone a forest track! Illusions of safety and psuedo prestige are probably the real reasons why people buy such vehicles

No, there are much worse, we've been building 4x4s for a long time and while the Frontera wasn't very good (they were Isuzu Amigos in the US) they weren't the worst.
The Lada Niva was already mentioned, but you'd find an Austin Gipsy, Land Rover series 1 or a Wiley's Jeep even worse.
But the Frontera really was bad, there are very few of them left running here, I can't remember the last time I saw one.

Lada made a 4x4 called the Niva, never driven one but I'd place a good bet its worse than the Vauxhall.

The Lada Niva must be the title holder of the Worst 4x4.
