One of my all-time favorites is "The Giving Tree." My second-grade teacher showed us a filmstrip (anybody remember those?) of it. I liked it so much that I wrote and illustrated my own book of it (I didn't realize it was a book at the time, since she showed us the filmstrip. When I was a volunteer teacher in Benin, Africa, a few years ago, I read it (in French) to the classes I visited.
