Sorry about your son's death. If he used a Web-based e-mail service such as Hotmail or Yahoo! Mail basic, you will need his password to get to his saved messages. Contact the mail service provider; perhaps they can help you.
However, if he used a POP or IMAP account (probably through a program such as Outlook, Eudora, or Apple Mail), his old mail is most likely stored locally on his computer, and his e-mail password is probably saved there too. Open up the program and see. If his password is not saved, you will need to contact his ISP.
Good luck.

Wow, first of all, I am sorry for your loss. Need a little more info, like which email provider was he using (AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.) and what email client was he using (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.)? There is still a good chance you may not be able to do this however.
