I'm 36wks, and have had a model pregnancy my doc says. My husband is a pilot and has weird schedules and will be off flying around the time I am due, and we also have our deductible paid for the year and I'm due Jan. 2nd anyways. Should I ask my doctor to induce me, so that my husband will be there for sure and so it's before the 1st of the year. I don't want to sound selfish but I don't want to be here alone when I go inot labor (new city and state and family is VERY far away!!) :( Are there risks to inducing? Or is this done regularly for these kinds of situations?? Thanks 1st pregnancy!!!!!!

I really cant imagine that it'll be worth it. Inducing is not natural and causes a lot of problems. More pain, longer labor, stress on the baby.

The baby is the one who releases the hormones responsible for starting the labor process, and its body only does that when its completely ready to be born as healthy as possible. Adding those hormones by injection, or by inducing labor, causes the baby to be put through the labor process before its ready. It also causes your body to go into labor before its prepared.

Unless its a medical emergency, i'd avoid it.

Stay active, walk a lot, mop your floors on hands and knees (it helps the baby get into position), use yoru breast pump a couple hours each day.. all these things encourage your body and the baby to start the labor process naturally.

Usually with your first baby you tend to go over your due date by at much as 2 weeks. Its possible you'll jsut be very pregnant while you're husband is away.

Its not fun, but part of being married to someone with a profession like your husband (or a cop, or doctor) is living and being strong enough to cope with the weird schedules and absense of your husband. He probably wont be there for the biggest parts of your lives, and your childs life. Its just part of his job.

I know how it feels, iam 700 miles from my nearest relative, have no friends I'd trust in the delivery room, and my parents are 1400 miles away. It sucks but its part of life.

I would consider getting an induction. I'm sure your husband wants to be there for the birth and I know you must want him there. Your baby is full term at 37 weeks so it should be fine. My Dr offered to induce me just so I won't have a christmas baby (which is my exact due date) I am considering it. I have heard though that inducing can take longera and might not always work. I would talk to your Dr as every woman and her pregnancy is different.

If you just a few days away from your due date, it will be fine. Induction is common practice now. Before, 20 + years ago they wouldn't induce until you were at least 2 weeks overdue. My daughter was induced after being 2 days late, with prostaglandin gel. It was a long 12 hour labor, before any results, but she was fine. I induced my son myself, 3 days before he was due. He was due sep 9, and that year sep 7 was labor day. I thought it was fitting. So sep 6 I drank 2 oz of casteroil (it's a liquid laxative, relatively cheap), chased it with a lot of orange juice (it tastes icky...like lipstick) and by that evening I was having contractions. I did the usual stimulation (tweaking nipples, walking, etc) and at 5:30 the next morning he was born. He too came out perfectly healthy.

No. I say no, because inducing a premature birth is never a good idea. Since you say his vacation time is congruent with your labor time, then why induce before he is there? In most some cases the baby doesn't come on the projected date but a later date. A natural and HEALTHY way to induce labor is having sex. Sex provides a natural way of loosening things up down there and gives your pelvic area exorcise for when the baby comes. hopefully this helps.

Induction is safe and very common. As long as everything is good and this is your 1st as you've stated, talk to your doctor and guess what, he or she would LOVE the predictability of induction. At least MOST of them do. Pitocin is the drug used and it is just a copy of the naturally occuring oxytocin which begins natural labor. It totally depends on your doctor. If you are a member of a medical GROUP, be aware that you may actually see a different doctor for your delivery (a not so nice surprise for some Moms, namely M-E!) so ask about this as well. Don't feel bad at all for asking. LOTS of people do just what you're thinking.
CONGRRATSSS!

That is what you should do. There is no risk in inducing. my friend got induced 2 weeks early. A few days will not hurt. This is done very regularly. You never know you might go into labor a .few days before any ways. I would defiantly ask they will understand!!

Good Luck!!

My daughter was born 5 weeks early and she is fine a few days will be fine

LOL this is EXACTLY what I did my daughter was do on the 3rd of Jan. and I had her on the 29th of Dec. I didn't have any complications but I would talk to your Dr. about it. I got to the hospital at 1 AM and my little girl was born at 10:46 AM so it does go a LOT faster, but unless you get some pain killers (epi or something like that) you may not want to do it because it causes the contractions to be a LOT more painful. Good luck!!!

My sister had 3 healthy children, with very easy labors and she was induced with everyone of them, so it is different for everyone.

They usually just use pitocin to induce labor, then they break your water to speed it up.

I went into labor on my own, but they ended up using pitocin and breaking my water anyway, because my labor was progressing very slowly. So, they might have to use those measures on you ANYWAYS.

My husband was deployed when I went into labor so I know what you mean about going through it alone. ITS HARD, but luckily my parents arrived JUST IN TIME!!

Talk to your doctor. Discuss the pros and cons. If he is willing to induce you and thinks its safe,I personally think it would probably be a good idea.

Congrats.
Most doctors WONT INDUCE. They believe in allowing nature to take its course. Unless something is wrong and the baby is in danger or you are, your doctor is unlikely to induce you.
I cannot believe your husband cannot take some time off once you start showing more signs of being ready. If you dialate to 2 or above and or start to be effaced (your cervix thins out)
You could try talking to your doctor, but I doubt you will make much progress.
Best of luck.

Being induced can actually lead to longer labors and it can increase your chance for a c-section. I was induced with my first two children and ended up with c-sections.

Everyone is different and every body reacts differently to pitocin. Ask your OB what they think. A few days early wouldn't hurt the baby.
