It depends on a few factors.

1st - Are you trying to play some of newest games on the older version of the PS2? ( The BIG one, Not the newer slim version.) I had a similar problem with the games freezing up on me. Madden 07, FF12, etc... I found the only way to remedy that problem was to trade the old PS2 in for the newer one at EBGames. They credited me $40 for it. The new one played the exact same games the old one wouldn't, with no problems.

2nd - As the people before said, use some of the home remedies - Toothpaste! LOL good one. But seriously, there are plenty of disc repair pastes for scratches.

3rd - Get a DVD/CD laser lens cleaner, that also releaved some of the stopping with the older PS2 that I had.

Good luck, and I hope the cheap route works out for you. Don't get pee'd off like me and beat the crap out of the console. Sure, that relieves a little stress, but as soon as you stop swinging you realize, IT'S GONNA DO THE SAME D@#& THING AGAIN :)

Game could be defective ..As in scratched..Is it a new game? If it is you can exchange it for a new one exactly like it at Wal Mart. If you've had it forever than try some of the home remedies they are talking about to fix it.
