Dell Inspiron Series. They are efficient and very inexpensive. They cost around $599 with software included.

A used IBM thinkpad (or other business-grade notebook).

You can buy used Thinkpads for $400 all day long, and if you take care of them (and if the original owner took care of them) they'll last for a looooong time.

The current $500 units break easily, and the support tends to be AWFUL.
