I really wouldn't recommend keeping your male and female together. Males are often very agressive towards females prior to breeding, and the female undergoes a lot of abuse. After they mate, they female would need to be removed immediately or the male will kill her to protect his fry. There's no way of knowing if they've bred or not if you keep them in a tank together all the time. And then it becomes an issue of having a third tank to put Dad in after a couple weeks when the fry hatch and begin to grow, and then it becomes an issue of raising fry, and then and issue of having even more tanks to put all the males in when they become mature.

If you're insistent upon keeping them together, you must keep all this stuff in mind. Read up on betta breeding to find out what all is involved.

My recommendation is separating them. Get two tanks that are at least 2 gallons each and keep them seperately.

If you change the water once a week you won't need a filter. Just make sure you do a 100% water change when you do. This doesn't establish a nitrogen cycle, but the changes are done frequently enough that they don't experience the ill effects of ammonia. Also, adding some live plants can help keep the water cleaner and the ammonia levels down. That being said, adding a filter never hurts.. just make sure it's not too strong, and put pantyhose over the end if you get one of those that hang over the side, because bettas can get sucked into those if left uncovered.

It depends how big the tank is. If it's five gallons or bigger, I would say you can get a filter. I have one beta in a fishbowl & i change the water once a week. But it's not a pain for me because it's a reasonably sized fishbowl. However, a tank can be more of a hassle. Keep in mind, though, even if you have a filter it's a good idea to change the cartridges as instructed, and to still change the water regularly.
Good luck!

If it's at least a gallon get a filter. You'll have to do 10% water changes with a siphon every week. And the fish will start their nitrogen cycle. It is more healthier for the fish that way. It will make things easier I remember having to empty bowls out every couple of days what a pain in the ***.

if your tank is too small for a filter then you should not have a male and female together. The only time you should do this is if you are trying to breed and you should have a bigger tank for that. You shhould get a filter if your tank is over 1 gallon.
