It can. Some women "spot" during pregnancy.

Also, our bodies have what are called "phantom" pains. The brain remembers what you should be feeling and actually sends signals that you are feeling what you know you shouldn't feel!

Examples: I had a total hysterectomy and yet for over a year I still felt the cramps as if I were having a period. And, people who have limbs removed say they can still feel it itching or moving a long time after it is gone!

When I was first pregnant with my son, but before I was "late" I could have sworn I was about to get my period...it felt exactly like that.

it also happens post menopause. the same monthly cycle of symptoms, for a while.
