Start thinking of it as a language instead. People like to communicate, their brains are wired for it. Consider math to be a symbolic language used by lazy people to communicate ideas, relationships, and functions and it will begin to make sense. When you start thinking of it as a way to communicate concepts that are a fact of life, then it really gets easy.

Consider that the math necessary to be able to make comparisons, whether things are equal and fair (=), or not equal called and inequality (< less than, > greater than). That in everyday life is seen in the word phrases, that is more, I am smaller, she weighs more, or the expression thats not fair.

Also, consider the fact that everything that exists is a single item and you either have that item, several copies of an item. or you have parts of it.

That is how numbers came into existance, to count things we call whole numbers, and to determine what part of the total it is, fractions, also expressed as decimals and percents. That is what happens when we use verbal expressions like I am 5 years old, i want double, that is only half way, or give me one of those.

Finally, algebra is a subject that deals with relationships and expressions. That is two things the brain is primarily designed to focus upon. You know that how far you go depends on how fast you walk to get there, and in math we call that a rate problem that can be ascribed to any moving object, d = r t.

Symbols to represent a thought or idea. Why symbols? So we don't have to write that is repetitively record commonly reoccuring words.

Example, have you ever kept score in a game. You know where H is the home team who you know, and V is the visiting team. That is algebra. The letters or words even represent the various scores for teams as the play their game. Everything you keep track of is recorded. Why, so people can see if their are relationships between factors that they might not have been aware of during the contest.

A fact know that food intake increase calorie consumption, calorie consumption increases weight, weight increase waist line and decreses self confidence in the attractability to another person, and also promotes disease in the body. Just a concept that math can be used to characterize and measure the relationships.

So, think of Math as a way to communicate and not things to be memorized and you should do better. Consider the following.

Math: Date 12/03/06

Language: Today is third day of the month of December in the year two thousand six.

Today is December third, two thousand and six.

Which makes sense. There are so many other examples

Also, did you ever notice that in our modern times that the first 3 things a doctor does to a child after its born is to note the time it was born to be able to measure its life span, measures its length and weight to be used to determine both its growth potential and development over the lifespan. (all 3 mathematical measurements) So much more....

Did you know that at one time Mathematics was considered a religion. It was split into several sciences and broken down to just the study of the digits that used to make up Numerology, Astronomy, Physics, Engineering, Graphic Design, Cartography, Methaphysics, Philosophy, etc. Everything that is operating on a "digit"al system today has mathematics as its primary operating system. Think about that, wow.

I think most students hate math and it's usually because they don't see how it applies to real life. When your teacher is showing something new, try to ask questions about how this is useful to your future and what real-life applications there are. You will use fractions in cooking and decimals for your bank account and just about anything money related. You wil use geometry when you have to have your own place and need to buy an area rug or enough paint to cover a wall. THe possibilities are endless and most adults use math almost every day without really even thinking about it. I hope this helps.
