Electro comes from Electricity
Lysis means to break.
Electrolysis in Chemistry is where an electric current is passed through a solution giving energy and causing a reaction to take place. Within the solution there will be positively charged particles called anions and negatively charged particles call cations. The particles are attracted to the differently charged anodes within the electrical circuit. Thus when electrolysis is carried out in e.g. a zinc sulphate solution zinc will plate out on one of the electrodes. This process is known as electroplating. Electric cells ( batteries ) are the reverse of electrolysis, a reaction takes place due to the elements involved and this causes an electric current. With rechargeable batteries, you have both processes, a reaction taking place to give power when the batteries are in use, then electrolysis to reverse the reactions when you charge them back up!
