We want to knock down the garage to make the garden bigger. We'd still have room for off street parking but do you think it would be a mistake to lose the garage Do buyers want garages these days?

Garages are the work of the devil. They are invariably ugly and cheaply built, they encourage people to keep junk and they take up garden space.

Garages may add to the value of your house, but so does a garden. A garage might not be such a crowd-pleaser if there arent any parking problems. The only way really to put a figure on these things is to ask an estate agent what people are looking for in your area.

People these days seem to live their lives with one eye on the property market, which is a bit tragic. All those people living sadly with 'neutral colours' when their heart says paint it purple!

If a bigger garden would give you joy, the garage has to go.

No-one around here parks inside their garage. They use their garages for extra storage space or have had them converted into another room. I think you would be knocking value off your property if you get rid of your garage. Why don't you look at house sales in your area (with and without garages) to get a true idea.

It depends on how you use the new space you have made. Garages make a house more attractive to potential buyers because it offers better security for the car and the insurance companies take this into consideration with their quotes.
If you still have room to park off-road, then in your case, a larger garden would be a better deal.

well as it is going at the moment is it likely that your street will become a "permit holders only parking" place, like what they have done up my road, i think by taking down your garage for the sake of a bigger garden would possibly decrease the the value of your house as people will be grateful for the garage if permits (which cost £30!) are put in place as their garage will be free! i do think people still use garages to store the car as its safer. but you could suggest it to potential buyers & then its up to them what they do to the garage. hope this helps!

to be honest, if your going to knock the garage down a conservatory would be a good idea in place. people do like garages but if you replace it with something rather than just making the garden bigger it would be a gret idea, you would still have a big garden and the conservatory would make it even better, that is if you have the money to do that. it would be a good purchase though and would add to the value of your house considerably.

Your property will be worth less. Garages add on to the resale value for storage for the vehicle, as a shop or for general storage. If it is about to fall down, then take it down. If ugly and stable, I suggest to perhaps pretty it up.
On the other hand, if you really want a bigger garden and plan on staying in the house for at least five more years, then why not enjoy your living space!

I would say keep it if it's in good condition. People like to have somewhere to put their car especially if it's a decent one. Gardens are a plus but most people look for low maintenance gardens as alot of people work full time, so a smaller one would suffice. I am an estate agent, keep the garage take it from me.

Lots of buyers won't even look at a house without a garage. I think it's a bad idea.

A garage is a very good selling point..it puts the price of the property up by 1/12 of the selling price..

I never keep anything in the garage except huge piles of sh*te myself, so it wouldn't bother me either way.

But when they build new houses these days they always seem to build them with integral garages, so I guess that means the housebuilders think there is a demand for them.

And they've probably done a lot of market research on it.
