I think it's a great idea. Include all major sports pennants: World Series, Superbowl, NBA etc. Then include exerpts from your papers about things political and environmental. I would still include info about 9/11 because it was such an event. Don't forget pics and things from your personal families.
Put in some price tags and shopping receipts that show the cost of bread and cereal and the like. Take a picture of your local gas station, McDonalds, etc. There wasn't really to much that happened this year. Stem-cell research controversy continues as does partial-birth abortion. The big news this year for some reason was: babies. Who's having em', who wants to have em' . The focus was really on Entertainment and there troubled lives: Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaugn, are they or aren't they? oohh! "Brangelina" and the baby, Shiloh. "TomKat" where's the baby, the big reveal and then the superstar wedding of the year. Anna Nicole Smith and all the circus that surrounds her. etc. etc. etc.
Oh yeah, don't foget like the cost of a car or mortgage rates and the cost to buy a home. Then maybe a journal about all the things you hope for 2007 and her future. Include ultrasound pics and a picture of their room just decorated.
Good luck it sounds like a lot of fun.

Neat question Patz.
My first thought would be a world news "flash". Status of world affairs at this time. Typical prices of items you would be buying 50 years from now(car, bread, house, bubble gum etc). A copy of the current Life Magazine, ( I have ones from when my grandfather was young and the ads are most interesting, especially the car ads) A music CD. I would also pick an interesting book from the Best Seller List.
What I don't think would be necessary is to include my pile of bills, the latest serial killers picture, or what happened on the # 1 rated tv show last night.
Some personal things would be fun: id bracelet worn on their birth day, my grandmothers famous recipes, and since my family is big on gardening, I would include a dozen acorns that fell from my oak tree the year, if the child has an insatiable green thumb like the rest of us, he could grow a "family tree" with one of them.
Lastly, I would include a letter of adoration and encouragement from his mother (myself).
Oh, and an explanation for the dozen acorns. :)

I love this question and this idea!
I would find everyday items that we tend to take for granted but make up a large part of our day.
An expired credit card
Empty package of a favorite food
Current issue of a favorite magazine
A metro card
A highway token
perhaps a bill -- my grandmother saved her bill from the hospital when she had my father. That was interesting!
written down memories of the pregnancy

All the answers that I read are not essential nor sufficient. I have boys and boys are known not to care about sentimental things. My parents have a Bag full of family photos in their bedroom for us and we dont even care to open it.Thus, the only thing I would like my boys to know about when they were born is that their parents loved them and that they were the joy of our lives. They were beautifully received with all the love and admiration in the whole world. This will make them go through life with lots of confidence and self respect and hopefully some respect for what we have done for them too. So, you can write these ideas and feelings and keep in your time capsule or keep photos or better still you can speak it out to her all the time together with a big hug and a huge smile. Beieve me she will remember that even when she is old and you are gone.
