I used to live around Marshall for many years. There are a lot of bedroom towns 5-30 miles from Marshall if you want to live in a smaller town of a few hundred people and drive daily. Which for most of the year isn't a problem. If you stay on the main roads of 19 or 23 they are usually cleaned off the earliest for snow.
Housing in Marshall can be very expensive. The housing is a lot cheaper in the smaller towns. With Minimal driving. Cottonwood, Balaton, Minneota,Tracy 15-20 minutes. Ivanhoe, Tyler, Granite Falls around 30 minutes. Cottonwood/Wood Lake just built a new school a few years ago. The Ivanhoe area is dying. Houses are cheap but the schools aren't in the best of shape. Marshall has just built a new Super Walmart with a lot of new restaurants, etc. going up because of it. The Varsity Pub has really great food for a bar.
A good website to check is www.gomarshall.net . Also if you can get onto the Hy-Vee website and check out their Hy-Vee trader there are a lot of houses for sale by owner and misc. items. A good place to start.
Entertainment isn't always really great. There is the Marshall 6 Movie Theater and lots of bars downtown, pool, bowling. In the past the mall hasn't been really great for shopping but we always managed to find what we needed without leaving town. There is the SSU College if you like sports or those sort of activities, lots of parks, history and city celebrations in the summer.
A good place to start for jobs is the MN Job bank which can be accessed on line by doing a search for that name. Schwan’s is one of the major employers with decent benefits, US Bank, MN Corn Plant. The Marshall Independent is also a good place to look for jobs.
There isn't much between Marshall, Willmar, Worthington, Sioux Falls, etc. but corn fields. But lots of hunting, some fishing opportunities.
Good Luck! It isn't a horrible place to live. We just needed to move where there was more fishing and trees :)
