A WiFi (not "wiffi") connection can be thought of as conceptually the same as a wired Ethernet connection. That means you need to get onto *some* local network in order to connect to the Internet. That network could be created with your own wireless router, or it could be a wireless access point at a library or a café. But it's got to be *somewhere* -- WiFi is unlike cellular Internet access in this regard.

You do not need a router if you are connecting at a hotel or coffee shop that offers wireless service.

If you are at home and already have an Internet connection you need to add a wireless router.

Linksys makes a good one. Very east to install. They run about $50 at Best Buy or Circuit City.

in order to use wifi i have a wireless router from linksys it was originally bought for the use of basic wireless Internet but then i got the Nintendo wii and it has built in wifi and it works perfect...the only thing you need to do is change the wireless channel inside of the modem from 6 to either 1 or 11 because i guess that wifi works the best on those channels

wifi is a lot like a cellphone. Something (a tower in the cellphone case, a wireless router in the wifi case) has to send out a signal and the component (a cellphone or laptop) picks it up. Wifi is a lot more data, though, so it isn't sent through the air like cellphone signals because it's really expensive to send it that far. Instead, inside a building someone will set up a much cheaper broadcaster (router) that only reaches inside the building. In your home, you would have to be the person who sets this up; in a library or various coffee shops or collage campuses, the owner will do this as a service to their customers.

Yes. You need to have a wifi router that will be connected to the ISP provider, so as to transfer the signal to your laptop.

To use it in your house you will need a router connected to your internet connection that sends out WiFi.

Many public libraries, coffee houses and the like also have free wifi. Starbucks has wifi, but it will cost you.

this router is $50. There are cheaper ones out there:

if ur at a hotspot then know cuz they already have one, but if ur at home then you would need one coming from ur cable/modem source and then you have to use the scan feature on ur laptop to search for signal. it'll find the signal for your router and then you'll be all set.
