My family always does a little snack buffet that I prepare earlier that afternoon. I fix a sausage and cheese tray, chips and dip, a cheese ball, some L'il Smokies and barbecue sauce in the slow cooker, a cookie platter, and an assortment of crackers.
That way, I'm not stuck in the kitchen cooking, and I can enjoy the Christmas Eve celebrations, too. It comes in particularly handy because I usually don't get back from church until later in the evening.

My family eats a meat salad (in German ~Fleischsalat), a German tradition passed down on my mother's side. I will say our recipe varies quite a lot form what I see on the web. We take several large cuts of quality meat, cook it with spices, and dice it with capers and onions. It has a 'dressing' made of the liquids from the capers and onions, mixed with sour cream and mayo. As an added bonus we usually eat the broth (from when the meat is cooked) as lunch on Christmas Eve. Also since we make such a large batch of meat salad, we usually 'fress' (or snack) on that the next day, which means I don't spend all of my holiday in the kitchen. Keep in mind anything can be tradition if it brings you happiness. Have a wonderful Christmas.

We do hor'devours... Everyone brings one or two dishes, plus cookies and cakes. Typically we have veggie tray, shrimp cocktail, pigs in a blanket, cocktail sausages, various ethnic apps (bought at trader joes... an excellent place to buy easy prep apps if you live near one...), pate's and cheese and crackers...
In the past, we've also done chili... White and red, two crockpots full.. that way noone has to cook xmas eve either....
