i was given a IBM thinkpad 390E and i updated all programs and installed proper drivers but when i connect my USB Ethernet adapter to usb port my lap top freezes. i then need to restart my system by pushing power button. i am able to connect to internet via phone modem . Any suggestions that could lead me in the right direction is greatly appreciated. i know it is an old system but hey ya gotta start somewhere right? Thanks

Yes, connect ALL connections BEFORE powering the laptop up. Older systems don't 'find' things as easily as the newer USB2.0 or newer systems.

You may need to install the drivers prior to attaching the usb/ethernet bridge.

pentium 150 notebook, a little long in the tooth.. What OS are you working with... If you are using win 98 you may need to download usb drivers found here.. http://www.usbman.com/win98seusbguide.htm

It sounds you have IRQ conflict, it is hard and time consuming to pin point the cause, try to UN install Ethernet card driver and re start computer let the computer install a new one automatically.

check if ur usb adaptor is compatible with ur laptop. ask someone at Ibm or search its site.
also try finding compatibility from ur adaptors maufacturer manual

u may also trying the ur adaptor on ur friends laptop or PC , maybe ur adaptor is faulty
finally check for driver updates also..
