I have a large stain on my cieling, and it won't come off. I have already tried Mr. Clean's Magic eraser and wet paper towels, and while they helped diminish it a bit, the stain is still visible. My mother suggested painting it. How would I paint just one particular patch without making it stand out? Does this mean I'll have to do my entire cieling. If so, what type of paints should I use?

as a professional painter for the last 26 years I can assure you you are not going to match it up with color samples you hold up to the ceiling and good luck getting a chip from the ceiling. There are 7,000,000 tints and hues recognizable to the human eye. So if you want the spot gone you will need to repaint, but use Kilz stain sealer on the spot first. But here is the logical side of your dilemma,if you find a color close to the ceiling, what is the greater of two evils...the stain on your ceiling or a mismatch paint color of the same size.

It might be mildew there is special paints for that. If its an old water stain the best thing to do is paint the whole ceiling one color again.
Even if you get a real close match by taking some of the color to the paint store you will always know its there. Even though people won't notice unless you point it out to them, it can be annoying.

It may be necessary to paint the whole ceiling, however, first try to paint the spot. You will first need to clean the area, then, apply a stain block and then paint. If the result is not satisfactory paint the whole ceiling.

First off, eliminate the source of the stain: roof leak, plumbing leak. You can spray the area with tilex if it is mildew, may require additional applications. Prime with kilz of zinser primer, also may require additional coats. Best recommendation is to re-paint with ceiling paint and you will have to do the entire ceiling to make it look good.

Go get some color cards for a paint store to match the color. I would make sure the stain is not from a leak first though.
