ebay is an excellent way to make money. you have to be real cautious in the wording of your policies...ppl will take advantage of you if they can. my daughter and i sell on ebay regularly...most ppl are honest and great to deal with, but there are those who look for ways to cheat you too. read through the sellers tutorial, and message board on the ebay site. much good luck to you...i hope you have a great experience and make tons of $$. ;o]

**it is much easier to do your listings through auctiva.com my son-in-law works for them...you get unlimited free photos, picture frames, and many other free perks that can cost an arm and a leg from ebay.
**auctiva is completely free to use. they have excellent tech support, unless you get rude with them, then they will cancel your acct. they don't "play that."

I think Ebay is brilliant! I've bought and sold many things on there now and I've never had any problems. Basically just make sure you don't buy anything from someone you don't think is trustworthy, obviously sometimes this is hard as you don't know anything about them but as you get used to the site you can usually tell! Someone with a lot of negative feedback wouldnt be a good choice for buying something off for example. If the postage is a lot it could be an idea to only ship to america(if thats where you live) or to other countries where it won't cost you a lot to post the item. A lower starting price in an auction always attracts people but high postage costs can put them off unless theyre willing to pay a lot. You could try it out with some smaller less expensive thing and see how you go. I got totally hooked after selling some stuff and consequently had a huge clear out!

I have sold and bought a lot of times on Ebay. To sell effectively, you have to make sure you never undervalue the item and never offer it for less than your bottom price. Also, preplan how you will be packing things ... always have the right box and packaging before you offer for sale. But be cautious ... there are some people who make a living out of cheating others ... I have sold a few expensive ornaments and someone told me to mark everything with my postcode in UV ink so that they cannot send it back claiming it was received broken. I have heard that people do this when they have a broken valuable item .... they can get a free replacement like this unless the seller is vigilant. Big items can be advertised for local pick up if you are happy with that although I realise the States is a big place! Last piece of advice is to be absolutely honest in your descriptions .. list all marks, scratches and faults .... better still, provide good pics showing the same. Oh yes, a good digital camera is a must although many things can be scanned to perfection. Personally, I love Ebay although the fees are creeping up. Oh, and never grossly overcharge for shipping .. just add a nominal amount for packaging and handling to the post office. And build up a good feedback score ... people use that to assess a seller. You may never get the best price on Ebay but you will have a vast audience ...... I offer my things on a 'worldwide basis' and I have sold all over the world ... with a lot to the US with never a complaint ( I am in the UK ).... happy selling ...

I buy and sell on ebay all the time. It is not much different than a flea market. There are good and bad people selling on there, you just have to be careful. That is why they have a feedback system. As for the shipping; there is a shipping calculator on there and you can add a handling charge if you want to. I only add a handling charge to cover any packaging material that I have to purchase (boxes, bubble wrap etc.). I also state this in my auctions so people know. Ebay is not fond of people charging more than it actually cost to ship and are cracking down on the people that do it. People list on ebay for different reasons, I started just to get rid of things around the house I no longer needed or wanted. I didn't have the time for a garage sale; so ebay was the perfect place. I didn't care how much I got for something as long as it was not here. I now sell some laptop parts on there and of course still sell misc. things.

p.s. I have been doing it now for a couple of years

Ebay is basically a huge marketplace, I have bought many items via Ebay and have had no direly bad results so far.

Ebay is a magnet for fraudsters and con artists so be vigilante, Ebay themselves are basically pretty negligent at policing the site.

Take good photographs of your items and make sure items are packed well. Larger fragile items are best specified as "pick up only". though it can of course mean the goods will not reach as high a price.

NEVER use Western Union to send payments and NEVER part with goods until they are paid for.

the thing is ebay sometimes isnt the best place to sell things i wouldnt dare to buy anything from there because for an example.
how about if someone was selling a cellphone.
the first time they bought it they took a pic.
then when the sell it it might be beet up. so just try to make sure people know that it is a good looking product and i think it would sell.

ebay is a good idea for the kinds of things your selling. also try amazon for books and cds etc... it's a good way to earn some extra pocket money.
I know it is a pain to pack it all up and pay for all of it, but hopefully on ebay you can set your packaging rate for the large items - so it will actaully cover the cost of the packaging.

For the valuable stuff- try Flog it!

Personally I found ebay a long process to actually post anything on, but I know someone who sells on there all the time so it's different for each person I guess. Other thing is make sure you add enough on for postage, I didn't think about it too much and ended up out of pocket

If you have items that are to big or to expensive to mail, advertise them as pick up only and you can arrange a safe place for the transfer.
