The first world is considered to be Europe, America, and part sof Asia where there is a vibrant economy, technology and medicine available for it's citizens and where things such as food and water are not immediate concerns. It's bascially a term for "standard of living"
Second World is now a redundant term, it used to be use dto describe Communist countries during the Cold War, America saw these countries as deficient to themselves despite them meeting the criteria for a "first world" in terms of economy and standard of living.

This term describes the world power balance during the cold war. The first world could be western countries, that were mostly developed and accepted capitalism. The second countries, in contrast, were said to be eastern block, with communist regimes.
Then, the third countries belonged to neither of the two groups, they choosed to make the "third" power. That's why this term was made.

My sister told me this, as she studied this at uni. It goes back to the days of the Cold War, Africa was considered the "Third World" because of its poverty, the Soviet Union was considered the "Second World" because it was little better than what was in Africa, people could survive in the Soviet Union, but just about manage to survive. and the West was considred the "First World" because of the riches it had accumilated due to the Capitalist nature of trade and wealth. (something that Africa had absolutley no access to and something the Soviet Union had very limied access to!)
I hope that helps

J-boy is correct 2nd world described the Soviet countries during the cold war, 1st world to the developed western democracies and 3rd world the developing countries which were abused in the struggle between the first two groups.
The only countries still in the 2nd world are China and Cuba.

They were the communist countries during the cold war. Look out it on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_World
First word are countries which are capitalist democracies, that are technologically advanced, and whose citizens have a high standard of living. The United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, and most of the countries of Western Europe are examples of first-world countries.

1st world countries are the well developed countries such as US, UK, France, Germany, Japan, Korea & etc...
2nd world countries "not official terms" are those developing countries such as Malaysia, UAE & etc...
3rd world countries are those in almost low in every aspects with higher rate of unemployment & poverty such as Zaire, Zimbabwe, Sub-Sahara & etc...
Most European countries are in 1st & 2nd world countries while almost all African countries are in the 3rd world countries and Asian countries scattered among those three category
