The original use of D-Day was applied to the beginining of any offensive. Because it is the largest single landing in history, June 6, 1944 will forever be referred to as D-Day. The Marines landed on the tiny island of Iwo Jima to secure a forward airbase for use by the long range B-29 Superfortress. The recent movie, "Flags of Out Fathers" was adapted from a historical account of the battle, and the men that raised the flag on Iwo Jima. Seven men raised the flag, six Marines, and one Navy Corpsman. Yes, the famous picture of the raising of that flag was staged, and that was the fifth or sixth take.

After the Battle for Iwo Jima, Admiral Chester Nimitz, Allied Commander in Chief, Pacific Theater, was quoted as saying: "Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue"

D day has nothing to do with Iwo Jima other than the fact they were both battles fought during world war two.

D-Day was the name given to the first day of operation overlord, in which the allied forces (u.s. britian etc) simoultainiously landed at french beaches and dropped in behind enemy lines to get into europe in what was to be the final push to germany

Iwo Jima was a battle for the Island of Iwo Jima that took place against U.S. forces who landed at the island to take it from the Japanese

I'm sure a quick wikipedia search would give you details on both

Hope that helps you out

Two different battles. D-Day was 6Jun1944 and took place along the coast of France. D-Day was the invasion of Europe to push the Germans back.

Iwo Jima took place in Feb 1945 and was a stepping stone toward the invasion of Japan.

D-Day was in Europe and Iwo Jima was in the Pacific

D-day was once just a generic, like H-hour, but the Allied invasion of Normandy (that's U.S., Canadian and British armies, and Normandy is in France) was such a huge thing that D-Day has since come to mean just that D-Day, 6 June 1944.
Iwo Jima is on the other side of the world. The Marines' taking of Iwo Jima was one of the last major battles in the Pacific theater in early 1945. Just north of Iwo was a smaller island with a radio station. A naval aviator was shot down trying to bomb that station, losing his crew though he himself was rescued. His name was George H.W. Bush.

D-Day and Iwo Jima had differences and similarities.

The differences:
D-day was important for landing allied forces (US, England, Canada, and others) in mainland Europe which was largely held by the Axis Forces (Germany, Italy). The war would have been difficult to win and would have gone indefinitely without this major offensive.
Iwo Jima was Feb 29, 1945 and was an island in the PAcific Ocean as the PAcific Campaign was to hop from island to island getting close to Japan with each.hop.

The similarities:
Both had high casualties D-Day had an estimated 10,000 casualties with 2500 dead. Iwo Jima had 26,000 casualties with 6000 dead.

Both had many brave men in smaller units where only few survived as casualties exceeded 75%- yet they kept fighting.

Both were "turning points" as D-Day placed enough men and equipment in range of knocking out remaining Nazis. Iwo Jima gave us an air strip in range of Japan

Ok! The battle of Iwo Jima took place during World War II in the Pacific. Iwo Jima was a small Island occupied by the Japanese. America needed to take the Island from the Japanese for two reasons: The first was it had an air field from which Japanese planes could take off and attack American ships. The Second it provided an air field were American bombers could land and take off which was in range of Japan itself. It inabled American bombers who had been shot up over Japan a place to land.

The Japanese High Command knew if Iwo Jima fell it would open the door to American bombing raids on Tokoyo and other Japanese Cities.

They had the island heavily fortified with tunnels and gun emplacements going down under the ground 22 stories.

Because of that it was one of the bloodiest battles in World War II
It was also one of the most costly battles in terms of American lives as well. there were more Congressional Medal of Honors awarded during the battle of Iwo Jima than any other single battle during World War II.

Whole battlatons of Marines were killed just taking the beach head at Iwo Jima.

I suggest you do two things to help you understand the battle of Iwo Jima. First you go see the new Clit Eastwood movie Flags of our Fathers. Second you go to Wal Mart and get the Victory at Sea DVD.

What everybody calls "D" Day is normally the invasion of Europe when the allied forces, mostly Americans, stormed the beaches at Normandy. But there was a lot of "D" days during World War II
Any time American forces stormed the beaches whether on Normandy, Italy, Iwo Jima. the day of the invasion was a "D" day.

Again the importance of Iwo Jima was that it provided a safe landing place for our B-29 bombers returning from Japan when they were all shot up.

In spite the number of Marines killed and wounded during the battle of Iwo Jima, the number of American pilots and air crews saved by having Iwo Jima to land on far out numbered the number of Marines killed or wounded on Iwo Jima.

These two battles where the turning point of WWII. Iwo Jima allowed allied forces to establish a foot hold in the south pacific. Giving them an air base with in striking distance of japan. D-Day was the day allied troops landed in Normandy. This made Hitler fight forces on two fronts (the other being in the east with russia). These were the first two major victories for allied forces in WWII.

Both are seperate campains during world war 2 (two) "D" day was when we attacked the Germans that had taken over France. We attacked the beaches of France and drove the Germans back.
Iwo Jima was an Attack against the Japanease that held the island by the same name. United States Marines fought there and won. Do you understand that wwII was against the Germans and then the Japanease after they attacked Pearl Harbor Hi. Please study this some more as History is so important. It is being vastly over looking in our schools today. As a result students know nothing of the reasons we are still free in this great land. God bless.
