I live in Flint Michigan. Cost of living is pretty cheap, but it goes with the territory of terrible paying jobs.
Flint was rated #1 PER CAPITA of murders in the US last year.
We dropped down to #4 this year (hooray!) You dont go out around downtown at night without a switchblade. You dont stop at red lights in the hood. You dont go into a gas station alone at night. I dont shop alone anymore- Ive been mugged already this xmas season. The schools around here are decent, some better than others. Flint used to be a GM town, but our economy took a dump when it left. Its now more of a college town, with U of M, Kettering, Baker, Mott, etc.
Job market blows, unless youre in nursing, then the demand is high. We have 4 understaffed major hospitals in our area.
Long story short- I WANT TO MOVE! lol
a 4 bedroom house with a fenced in yard w all appliances in a decent school district costs you about 550 month. Not too shabby, but you dont make much more than that, so our cost of living is cheap.

The economy in the vast majority of the country is exceptionally good -- it has seldom been better -- of course there are always a few exceptions. It's a shame people in a place like Michigan and other areas rooted in the old economy suffer some localized problems. Naturally, everyone has this hard-wired biological impulse to complain about how bad the economy is, but for most people that's absurd.
It's certainly booming where I live in Texas. My firm has constant job openings and can't get any applicants, my intern tells me all her college friends about to graduate all have 6 job offers, and I heard on the news that the oil companies around Houston have so many thousands of engineering jobs open that they've started "speed-dating" job interviews to see as many people as possible.
