I think its a great name. I was going to call my son that 15 years ago but I chickened.
A great bit of advice I had from a teacher friend was, don't worry about an unusual name, you should see what's on the pegs at school. That is so true. The variety is incredible. You certainly dont need to stick to 'safe' names so your kids fit in as some of their classmates will have names you have never heard of - and thats not including all the lovely ethnic names we have in schools these days.
Remember too you are naming the adult as well not just your cute little baby.
I was listening to Radio 5 last night and they said one of their colleagues had just called her new baby Oscar Sampson.
Its possible Oscar is about to change from an unusual name to one of the top choices, as happened with Jack and Chloe!
I think it's a good idea to give your child a second given name as well, in case they really hate your choice, thats what I did.

I don't think of it as a cat or a dog name, or Oscar the Grouch either. I'm not a big fan of the name Oscar, athough it has slightly grown on me. Remember, kids can be cruel, so be careful with the name you pick. I didn't think of the Grouch thing, but others on here did, so that could be potential bullying material (stupid as it sounds, kids will make fun of anything). Although, kids these days don't watch the Sesame Street do they? All their cartoons and shows are computer-generated hi-tech stuff, so that may not be an issue.
Anyway, if you truly like the name and are sure you won't change your mind, go for it: it's what you want, and you can't exactly ask your child if they like it or not can you? Also, as someone before said, I think it's a good idea to give them a second or middle name, so ifthey hate theirs, they have a resource (unless they hate that one too!) lol.
Good luck

I don't know about it being a name for a cat or a dog but when my four year old hears the name Oscar he asks, "like the guy in the trash can?" After hearing him ask that I don't think I would name a child Oscar.

I'm in Egland and Oscar seems quite popular at the moment, a frient of mine has a 7 months old boy called Oscar and when she when in having him there was another baby born who was called Oscar.
I had a cat called Oscar tho so it reminds me of a cats name or the grouch so not that keen but if you like it go for it. My daughter has got what I think is an unusual lovely 1st name but I have given her a "normal" middle name so if she doesn't like it she has got something more run of the mill to choose from!

I'm a substitute teacher. I see a lot of little Hispanic boys named Oscar. It's a good strong old-school name. There will most likely me the Sesame Street conotation though, but more kids are growing up on cable/dish so Seseme Street could be obsolete by the time little Oscar reaches school age.

It's also mainly not about the name.. It's about the person attached to it. To plenty of people, I have a pretty boring/nerdy/lame name, but people have never given it any thought in real life. They would also never describe me as any of those things. (And I'd probably sucker punch them if they did, anyway.)
Having said that, just as no human being is perfect, no name is perfect. I think that not all names need be a perfect fit from the get-go, your child will undoubtedly grow into whatever name they're given. Plus, there will be kids with ridiculously made up names, or foreign-sounding ethnic names. No one is going to get singled out for having the name "Oscar"..
Anyways, to prove my point, I can take note of some of the names/user"names" in the comment section.

OOOOO, when I was a kid, we have a wonderful black cocker spaniel that was named Oscar, and he was a wonderful dog. He was so sweet! He loved to go riding in the car with you and sit on the drivers seat with his paws on the steering wheel! We would put sunglasses on him and then watch the reaction of people passing by. Oh, I am from the US, not England. Not sure what they name their dogs there.
I wouldn't name a boy Oscar. Find another name you love, then use Oscar for his first pet.

It's a great name. It makes me think of Oscar Wilde. Oscar Wilde was a nineteenth century writer and about the wittiest person who ever lived. People still love to quote him today.
I would be proud to have such a name myself and I think it is a good name for a child or a pet as it is a nice name and classy.

It's quite sweet, the only down side i can see to it is perhaps Oscar the grouch from sesame street but I can't see that being a major bullying point in the playground. If you like the name go for it. Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy and birth.
