instead i would suggest,
1. to install ccleaner a free downlaod, to clean your temp folder, temporary internet folder, history, cookies which can recover space.
2. don't install software into c drive. keep as much space as possible
3. move all your data from c drive to any other drive.
4. move your recently installed software into other drives.
5. remove un used software from c drive.
if you run out of space, immediate effect is blue screen error to system crashing, so keep your c drive safe.

Absolutely DO NOT compress your C harddrive. I'll break it down for you:
The C drive holds the operating system (ie Windows XP). The OS cannot run compressed. All the DLLs and .EXEs and etcetera that keep it running will automatically make your computer not recognize an OS.
You CAN compress some documents such as "My Documents"; but do not compress Program Files, Windows. Really, just compress personal documents. Compressing the full drive would be suicidal for all your files and documents.
