a cake is one of several.

the cake is the one and only.

"a cake" uses the indefinate article "a" and implies that this is one of several cakes that you may have made.

"the cake" uses the definite artilce "the" and refers to a specific cake, perhaps the only one you made, or one that you had referred to earlier.
