if you model the situation using letters instead of numbers then you can tell how each component relates to the others. so if you e.g. change the length of your part in engineering then you can easily tell how to scale all the component parts from the set of algebraic equations you set up. or if you need to change the flow rate of a system then you can tell how this will effect all the parts and characteristics of the flow... it's a very useful device. i know it's hard to get your head round at the start but in engineering and science deciplines it's a very very useful tool.

Algebra is more than what you make of it in your question. The numbers which are replaced by letters are called varibles. Most variables are unknown algebra helps us determine the unknown variable. Take this very simple algebra problem 2 + a = 5, to most people the answer is obvious a = 3, but to someone who suffers from math anxiety that simple problem becomes an insurmountable problem.

In my youth I failed to see the need for algebra it was useless mathematical system that served no purpose. But once I went to college and had to take algebra I at once saw the proverbial light. Algebra has applications in science, landscaping, carprentry, engineering, and a whole plethora of other occupations. Algebra was used in determining the distance of the moon from earth by shooting a laser at a mirror the apollo astronaughts left behind. Perhaps the average Joe off the street won't ever have a need for algebra, but without it some of the things that he enjoys would not have been possible without it.

Mathematics has many uses in everyday life. Perhaps Algebra seems to be useless for your everyday life, but it is just a more powerful form of Math that you don't need yet. Maybe your life will never need higher math but maybe it will. Simple math uses simple processes to get to simple answers. + - x / may be all you will ever need. You certainly don't need Algebra to balance your check book.

But in balancing your checkbook - which you should do - you have all the information you need: balance forward, checks written and subtract = available balance. Big deal.

But we live in a world where we don't know all the facts. Algebra is one of the tools that we can use to find the information we need.

Beyond Algebra is Calculus. Perhaps you will never need to know how fast something is traveling, and in which direction, after accelerating @ 3 G for 17.38 minutes and how to position its attitude for a second thrust of .6 G for 12 seconds in order to match the speed and trajectory of a second object with a known altitude - with which you want to dock - which is coming toward you at 17,000 miles an hour.

In this world, hi-tech is where many high paying jobs will be found. Some of them will use people skills, and some will use advanced math skill. You should be sure you are prepared for your best career.

;-D Simple math is not going to do the trick.

Algebra to Science is like English alphabet to the Language. How does alphabet help you? A few letters of assorted shapes? Algebra gives you the basic building blocks over which entire gigantic edifice of Mathematics and Modern Science as whole rests.

Because often you need to remember a formula that contains many variables represented by various letters. Then, when needed, you replace all the variables with the desired values and so you can calculate a result.

There are many mathematical (and real life) problems where many relationships are understood but actual values are not. Algebra provides on a set of tools for utilizing known relationships to find unknown values.

two people have six cookies. they want to distribute them evenly. therefore, with the number of cookies being "n", you can use algebra to find out how many cookies each person should get by:
2n=6.
there! it's simple, but it's algebra.
