Crabs are a lot harder to take care of than most people think . I wouldn't advise them as a starter pet. Have you thought about Triops? They don't live very long at all, but they're quite easy to breed and care for, and are very interesting animals. Sort of like sea monkeys I guess, but an awful lot bigger, more attractive and interesting. There's a few good links in my sources box. I advise you have a look through the sites even if you don't much like the sound of them, they're quite interesting to read about and you may well change your mind.
If you decide to go for an animal that lives in a tank but not in water, stick insects are really good too. They require no attention, but do need feeding and cleaning out regularly. You can get all sorts - simple green ones to huge brown spiky ones. I would advise not keeping too many eggs if you go for the green Indian stick insects, though - speaking from personal experience they breed faster than rabbits!
Whatever pet you decide on, good luck and don't forget to read every available source you can find on care. (: Most libraries have an extensive section on pet care that would be useful to you.
EDIT:
Some people have suggested turtles hamsters and lizards. Not a good plan. For a hamster to be well socialised and friendly you need to handle them daily for a reasonable length of time, and it doesn't sound like you have the time for that. A hamster won't be happy living in a small cage without company from its owner, and they usually can't live in pairs. Mammals aren't a good plan if you can't offer them a lot of attention. Lizards are also a bad idea for an easy pet. You'd have to source live food, keep an eye on them to check for shedding etc. Baby crocodiles... Well, I think you can ifgure out for yourself why that's a bad idea! They don't stay small forever, and most zoos have more discarded pets than they want already.

A turtle would be nice..You could place rocks around inside the aquarium and a small pool of water.Of course they do stink if you don't keep them clean.
My grand-daughter can't have pets where she lives,so she got an artificial fish tank complete with the animated fish that hangs on the wall.It comes with a light that you can use for your room..No cleaning or food needed..LOL

Get a hermit crab, they don't live in water, but you could make a little "pond" in it's cage or aquarium for it to drink out of. You could also put fish in the water. Gold fish could survive in there. Hmm, I wonder if the crab would eat the fish? Probably not. Lizards and other things would eat them.

how about a hamster?they are small and can live in tanks or cages.they are easy to care for.feed every day or so.fill water bottle abou once a week.clean droppings out of cage every 3-4 days.do a complete cage cleaning about once a month.also you can hold and play with them when you want.they are very soft.you can fix up thier cage so they have room to play and get toys for inside and out side of the cage.i bought on for my 12 yr old daughter.i am 41 and i enjoy the hamster as much as my daughter

turtles or frogs added to the ghost fish maybe. make it interesting as long as turtles do not eat them ha ha. I don't know if they can live together. look at the local pet store for odd unusual things to put in an aquarium. good luck.
