I would say learn good american english, learn to speak with and without an accent, because foriegn accents are always sexy to us americans. If you move here, it's either New York or Los Angeles for the acting hubs. However, know that there are a million other people in the same city chasing the same dream. So you may be a waiter, waitress or bartender for a long time, with acting jobs here and there. Most foriegn actors that seem to make it here were really big first in their own country. If you land a role in a worldwide hit, I think americans would be able to hear about you, doesn't mean it has to be a hollywood production. A lot of american movie stars got their start in television commercials. Also there is a trend of television actors becoming movie stars where before if you did television, you didn't do movies and vice versa.

Practice your art, work hard to be great. Get an agent that doesn't charge you money up front. A real agent should only make commission on the work they get you. But you may need to spend money on photos and a portfolio.

Know that also a lot of times it comes down to a look, they are looking for that character and someone that reflects that character, it is not always a reflection on your skills as an actor. Sometimes it's good to be different in auditions. When the actor that played Al Bundy on Married with Children auditioned, he auditioned as his Uncle Frank or something like that. When every other actor was auditioning as Ralph Kramden, the Honeymooner's character that Jackie Gleason played so well. Because he was different and original, he got the part.

It is easy to find an acting agent, I think that maybe they wouldn't want to do anything until you got here, but you can see. Do a search on google for new york talent agency or los angeles talent agency or new york acting agency, etc. There are a ton of them.

Also, have a plan for living and money. New York City and Los Angeles can be expensive places to live, especially New York. Check out housing costs on the internet before you leave. Most apartments require a deposit of the first and last month's rent. You can save money by having roomates, and may be able to get around the first and last month's rent deposit on a sublease. There are websites that have postings for roomates too, I don't know any offhand, but you can do a search on google. http://www.craiglist.org might be a good resource. I don't use it much but it is an online classified listing for most cities in the U.S.

Lastly good luck, as someone that is also in the arts (musician) I understand the dream.
