it is really annoying that football is referred to as soccer.
Football was around long before American football so if anything should change its name it should be American Football.
I know that Charles Wresford Brown came up with the word when asked' Do you want to play rugger (rugby)' he replied 'no i want to play soccer' the word soccer is a shortened form of aSOCCiation Football but it is irritating that the Americans think that they can just change the name of one of our national games just because the name is similar to theirs. what is even more annying is that British people and the media are blindly going along with it and accepting the situation.
true that is way of the British but this time we should really stand up for what is ours! (As 'God Save the Queen' plays softly in the background!)

Well we Americans are particular about our football. I mean no disrespect to you soccer, I mean the other football, fans; but the name sticks as far as America is concerned.
I have no idea where we got the word "soccer" from. My dictionary claims "soccer" is derived from association, as in association football.
Perhaps we can use the term "FIFA football" instead of "soccer." Will that satisfy everybody?
How do the Aussies distinguish bteween FIFA type football and Austriallian Rules Football?

Americans are dumb. They don't have lorries, a bonnet is a hat for children, they don't have a king or queen, a boot is a type of foot covering, they don't have water closets, and when the worlds most popular game started to be played there, they called it soccer because the name football had already been taken. And someday they will get FIFA changed to FISA.

Association Football - abbreviated to Soccer
As it is the original type of Football, originally played in Britain, we can and do just call it Football.
Rugby Football - abbreviated to Rugger
Invented by William Webb-Ellis while a pupil at Rugby School (again in Britain) who didn't understand the rules of Football and picked up the ball and ran with it.
American Football - abbreviated to Football because they don't understand any other game of Football.

Uhm, NO. American football can only be renamed if using a rough and tough name. Soccer sounds a bit wimpy for that sport.

the british came out with the term football and i think that the american's ( as always) loves to copy people's idea and make it into their own. So... apparently they saw the british football and like the idea of a small-shaped object being pass around the courts and each team trying to get into each other's goals. So the americans modify the idea and copy the name of the english beloved sport.
