Building your PC means it will be very hard to run MAC OS X, but if you are gaming choose XP and Linux if you want to run few games but have a more stable and safer work enviroment.

Or you can duel boot.

.
If you want speed and no crashes
you will want to go with Windows NT technology,
therefore, you don't want any windows 95, 98 or ME.
Instead you want to go with Windows 2000 Pro
or Windows XP
They are much the same, except
Windows XP has more built in wizards
to make tasks automated
rather than having to actually know how to do things, and Windows XP has better security
WITH the SP2.
I do not recommend the newest Windows V

Mac is reliable, but does not have compatibility with many of the mirad of programs built for windows.

Linuix is fast and secure, because it seems that hackers and virus makers have not targeted that Operating system.

So, if you have a large hard drive and a goodly amount of ram installed, go with XP
If you want something less hoggy, more sleek, with all the capabilities of XP, that is compatibile with most of the programs today
go with Windows 2000 Pro.

You like pro, but don't know how to do many tasks?= that's ok, get immediate instructions from 2000 Pro through the Explore HELP
R-click START > L-click EXPLORE > on tool bar click HELP

Also, you want Internet Explorer 6 with SP2
(NOT 7 !!! too many bugs yet)
OR
Mozilla Firefox explorer

Go for Windows! Almost everyone uses Windows so if you are stuck with some problem, its always many people around that can help you. The other OS's are not as popular as Windows, so u will feel like you are living on a isolated island while using them.

So go for Windows! U cant go wrong there! =)

I will suggest you best way that if you have good Graphic card, Motherboard, 1GB or more RAM and good Hard hard like 160GB or more then make the drive dual boot or virtual drive and you can use the system with both OS Windows as well as Linux as you can experience yourself which OS is best as if you know how to run and all command in LINUX then its the best else it not for you and XP its friendly and ready to use.

I would go with windows. It can be hard to find stuff that works with mac or linux. It may be better to wait until windows vista come out

Well the jury is still out on that one, there are ppl from each camp that will tell you that theirs is the best, but as far as i can tell they each have their strengths and weaknesses:

Windows, gaming is alot easier, lots of commercial software and hardware available for it, but has alot of security issues.

Mac, better security and stability, alot of linux software can easily be ported for Mac, but less software available.

Linux, better security and stability, alot of free software alternatives to commercial, alot of Mac software can easily be ported for linux, but less commercial software availible, gaming is posible but can be difficult to get working(im a linux gamer, WoW and Counter Strike: Source).

If you just want it to work and dont care how it works, go with window or mac, but if you want to learn, i recommend ubuntu linux. Or you can dual or triple boot.

And i didnt want to bore you with excuses, like why windows sucks for security, why linux sucks for games, or whatever is wrong with mac.

This really depends on what you want to do with the computer. Windows has a lot of software out there, but it is Microsoft, so you get a lot of extra stuff with it, no all of it desired.

MAC and Linux are not so prone to virus attacks but you have to constantly download updates

Windows all the way, not as relieable as the other two, but the most compatable with most software out there. most supported.
