We have built a Home-made raft I intend on racing against another team. Currently our design is made up of barrells and held together with wood braces you can see a pic at Http://www.flickr.com/photos/dantrons . We are unsure if we should make a cone like structure at the front to 'cut' the water (reducing drag) when we power through. Do you think this will make a difference? Or will be not be travelling fast enough to make any real gains by adding a cone piece on the front to cut the water? Thanks for your time, and hopefully your answer! Dan.

If you are talking about a raft without an engine, don't worry about hydrodynamics, as you won't be cutting through the water, but get swept along with it. If you want to be faster than the competition, reduce weight, but increase resistance. You want the current to rip you right along, don't you? So, build light, and build huge. That should get you going. Think "sailboat" - only that your "wind" is the current.

don't know about the cone thing but think about the weight it will add to the raft....

Since you'll be racing it, I'd do whatever to reduce the drag. You don't want to lose:)
