There is a great bidding lodge in Ecuador called La Selva. It is 60 km down a river in the middle of the jungle. They have great birding guides there and there is a good posibility of seeing 400 to 500 different birds. Then from there head to Argentina to spend some time at Iguazu, one of the great falls of the world and also a good site for birds. A good chance to see 100+ different birds there. Then from there to Buenos Aries to visit Costanera Sur right in the city. Maybe 50 different birds there. Then south to the Valdez Peninula to see the sea birds there and then on to Tierra del Fuego to see the southern species, maybe 30 to 50 different birds there. From there head on over to Kenya. Easy to pick up 500 different birds in Kenya.

Briefly - try and stay in youth hostels, they are dirt cheap and you'll meet a lot of like-minded people - some of which you may join forces with on your travelling, especially in the states where people tend to hire a 'cross-USA car' (or buy a banger) and drive across in a group of 3 or 4.
Now places - USA (silly) especially Florida, Washington DC, New York (state and city) Niagara Falls, chicago, The rocky mountains (Both USA and Canada), any national park (or all!!) LA, San Francisco, Monument valley and the Grand Canyon are definate musts.
Canada - Banff and Jasper National parks, I hear vancouver should be visited too.
Austrailia - anywhere in the outback, ayers rock and the olga's, kings canyon, 3 day boating trip from the east coast - so relaxing, I found Sydney boring but I'm not much of a city/party person. I wish I'd had more time in Oz, as I only had six weeks and it takes so much time to travel anywhere (plane it about).
You should see a lot for the money you have (6 weeks in Oz cost me about 2 grand including flights). You'll probably want a good six-months though.
Try to get on trips with other similar people - I can't find the company I travelled with unfortunately.
Good luck and have a brilliant time

The time is right to look east. Have a trip down to Asia, which would cover Malaysia & Singapore for propobly 12 days.Followed to Thailand in Bangkok & Pataya. Moving to Burma, which will be good for adventure. If you want, Turkey & Iran can be fab due to its fashion and modernism. Move then to India, which can be best of the lot for its tradition (delhi), adventure , night life (bombay/mumbai), Taj Mahal (Agra), Sun Tan, massages and fun (Goa as well as Kerala). A month or more to India will be short, but worth every penny and time. Enjoy your trip. Cheers

Besides the plane ticket, that 10,000 will go a heck of a long way in Brazil. And, if you are male, straight, and don't have a wife, you may get one in Brazil..haha. ...They love English speakers. Just don't mess around while you're there. But it's a beautiful country and cultrue. Salvador and Rio are great spots. But be careful in Rio, it can be rough.
