Ive got a 99 metro 4 door with a 4cyl automatic transmission question? How many forward gears does the tranny have?It shows L 2 D.Is this three gears? It shifts fine,it goes from L to 2 To D but it seams like it should have one more gear. When going at 55mph it sounds like the rpms are high. However it gets almost 40mph so im not sure if this is just a higher rpm car.Ive never had one until this point.Someone with the correct anwser will be given 100 points for knowing if this is normal. Please help me I dont want to hurt the car if its not suppose to be ran like this or is it normal?

If the RPM's are higher at 55 than you think they should be, then you need to contact a Geo dealer and have a talk with the service manager. Just because you have a 3 speed transmission doesn't mean it shouldn't have a lock up torque converter. Check your fuses for one that says brake lights, or transmission. When you are doing 55 keep your foot on the gas pedal and touch the brake pedal to see if the engine RPM's come up when you mash the pedal down a little, and if the RPM's change to slower when you release the brake pedal. If it does, then you have a lock-up converter that is working fine. If you don't notice any change, then you may suspect a fault in the lock-up circuit. A bad throttle position sensor will do this sometimes, as so will a brake light switch as it gets power from this switch when the brakes are released. A faulty vehicle speed sensor will also cause this problem. Check for the obvious like a fuse, loose wires, and if you don't find anything, give the service manager a call.
Glad I could help you. Good Luck!!!

Sounds like a 3 speed. Some overdrive transmissions(3+ speeds) have a "D" with a circle around it. Overdrive doesn't usually kick in till above 45 mph. Metro's are kinda known for the fuel economy in city driving, where you normally wouldn't even use a 4th or higher gear.
