Sadly, it's not just America. The youth of today in the UK also seem to have a very limited grasp of the English language, due to texting & shorthand. They also seem to spend very little time in school, as well, due to the fact that the teachers don't want to be around them any more than they have to.

In the UK employers are seriously concerned about the lack of literacy in both school leavers and college graduates - they are saying it's something like 30% that have to be trained in reading and writing before they can do a decent job.
Other answers have mentioned that kids talk to each other in 'txt' language and one has said it's 'kool'. The trouble is it isn't like cool man if you can't be understood, it's like showing direspec' to others, know what I mean, innit?
A great deal of blame can be laid at the feet of educators. For a long time they considered it was 'uncool' to correct a child's spelling and grammar wot is proper like was a total no no. It was seen as elitist. Hopefully that point of view is changing.

well since people are learning how to write before learning how to type, I'm guessing in typing is because:
*people make typos
*people are a little tired of having to do all that correcting stuff in school or work and just don't want to do it all over again.
*There is something called chat speak....
in writing,
*Well maybe if they're writing some story or whatever its a rough draft...they will either get someone to or they will themselves edit it.
*They're too lazy.
The educators are doing their jobs, and no it isn't the students either. It's just that they're tired of doing that where ever they go or something like that...
and if you think that the education of the youth of America is endangered, then that's how you think.

i think its just easy to make a typo.
I don't see why people get so uptight about it. Can you still understand what they are trying say? I think so.
I think the ignorance comes from people who try to make it look like they have never made a typo before...not the ones who actually do. English is a means of communication. If you understand what the person is trying to communicate, mission accomplished. Besides, have you remembered everything your third grade teacher taught you? Prob not

Actually, I don't think they're quite as dumb as they seem. Some of it is slang in the way they're writing. It looks cool to shorten words and write choppy sentences. Others seem to be REALLY young. They're only 8, 10, 12...and their writing skills just aren't very good yet.

Teens, children, foreigners, laziness, done on purpose, lack of writing skills, rush to ask and answer questions to get points, etc... In the end, if you can understand the question and answers - then the system succeeds.

I agree with you. It is frightening. Sometimes, I truly cannot understand what they are trying to ask. I wonder if that is how they actually speak, too. It goes way beyond spelling.

Good point, well made.
It's impossible not to notice the
many grammatical errors found here
on Q&A.
And, it's a little scary.
