check you sound properties - and ensure that they are all set to max and not muted - (in the control panel)
ensure the volume control wheel on you laptop is set to full - if you have a laptop of course
try using some headphones - if the sound works through the head phones - then you may have a speaker problem
BUT THIS USUALLY WORKS -
if you can not hear any sounds - try this
click start
right click on my computer > click properties
select hardware then device manager
click on the plus next to sound video and game controllers
look for something like realteq 97 or a sound chip
right click on it then uninstall
now go back to the top and click on the plus next to the ata/atapti controllers
uninstall the ide primary controller
now allow the system to restart
then the system will ask to restart again
see if this works
PS also if you system comes with a DRIVER disk put this in and reload the sound drivers

well
if you look at the bottom right of your screen you wioll see a microphone icon.
click this and then a boxwill come up looking something like an equalizer. then adjust the sound. NB: make sure that the sound is not clicked on mute, if this is the case then this is why you cant hear anything
and dont forget to check to see if the speakers are actually on. common problem

It sounds like you have a problem with one of your codecs. Codecs are small plug-in programs which allow media player programs like Windows Media Player to play a certain type of sound or video file.
If the problem is with a certain application other than Media Player, then try uninstalling and re-installing the program. If your problem is with Media Player, you can uninstall it and then download Media Player from Microsoft's web site. You can uninstall Media Player by going into Control Panel and clicking on 'Add/Remove Programs.' Then you select 'Add/Remove Windows Components' on the left of the window and uncheck the box beside 'Windows Media Player.'

A lot of these answers are good. However there is one option which hasn't been mentioned. Is it only recent video / movie clips that you can't hear. If it still works with older ones then the problem may be that you don't have sufficiently up to date audio codecs installed.
Do a search for audio codecs and you'll find loads of free downloads.

Is the player that you use to play the movies screwed up? Maybe try a different program to view movies.

It might be either that the sound of the movie is not compatible with your computer or you might have to buy new speakers.

check the options of your mediaplayer, you may have the default output pointing at the wrong type or control. Also check your volume controls to make sure the volume for the media type is set. (i.e. wave, input, etc.)
