I'm just going to chime in and say that despite the other comment, a ferret is NOT a good pet for a 12 year old. They are NOT low-maintenance pets, they are extremely high maintenance.
They also cost alot to properly care for, believe me, I own two.
That being said, fish are a great option if your child is willing to learn how to properly care for them., Same goes for hamsters or gerbils.
However you need to make sure that if your child stops caring for the pet, that you do care for it.

Hi, for a 12 year old child the best pet would be a cat, unless you have allergies. Cats are very self-dependent, unlike dogs they do not Need or Demand constant attention. At 12 your child is still learning about responsibility and with a cat he/she will learn it, by feeding, cleaning the litter box, and bathing and brushing. All good tools of learning responsibility that comes with owning a cat. I know I have 3. Cats, especially when kittens also make great companions they love to play and will make you laugh and they are also great consoler's when your sad, most cats come to there owners and will try to comfort them my purring or licking their hand or face. And lastly cats, if you take GOOD care of them cats will live on average 16 to 18 years so your child will truly have a long time friend. I hope I was helpful in your decision. GOOD LUCK!
p.s. If your worried about having a cat when you already have a dog, I wouldn't, most dogs don't mind cats especially if its a small dog. My cats and dog play together all the time.

A cat. They are very independent but are good to teach some responsibility. Depending on your dog, if he's good with other animals then I'd go for a grown cat. If not, then I'd get a kitten because it's easier to integrate the new pet if they're young. Cat's require about the same amount of cleaning up after and feeding, but they are much more friendly and fun to play with.

Sounds like YOU are the primary care giver that doesn't want more animals!
How responsible is your 12 yr old?
Do they really want to take care of it? if so I would recommend a
turtle that can tolerate a little neglect (I don't condone the neglect)
and be ok. They need fresh water, chicken, tomato's, worms ect. to stay healthy. And they can go a few days here and there of being over looked. They will live a long time with good care.

In my experience, ferrets are low maintainace and very entertaining, almost like little humans. I think it's a good pet for a 12 year old because a lot of times young adults and teens have so much going on that they forget responsibilities. Bunnies are cute, but not that interesting. Birds are excellent pets but require a lot of work for talking and care. That's the reason the best bet is a ferret, for entertainment and low maintaince.

Maybe a guinea pig there really easy to take care of are you can get a bunny. I breed lion head bunnies you can look it up. They have a mane there so cute. Maybe a ferret or a chinchilla but ferrets bite and chinchillas need dust baths. A hamster or a sugar glider. A degus or a gerbil or a mouse.
Hoped I helped :)

Get a 55 gallon fishtank and buy an oscar. They're really awesome fish that actually have personalities. They need big tanks though. A 55 gallon tank is big enough for 1 adult one.
