According to a report on LBC (a London speech radio station) that East Enders will be taking a 6 month hiatus starting in april from the BBC tv programming schedules after next spring (apparently april, according to the news sources)

Bad news is though, they are going to bring back a 'revamped' eastenders later in the autmn, this time set in a 'cul de sac', rather then a square...being honest with you though, after 20+years, I think eastenders had had it's day

Eastenders was never and will never be a 'coronation street' or anything like it, the reason why coronation street was so successful and worked is because for the majority of it's time. most of the production team, writers/script writers etc actually came from that part of the world (namely Manchester/Lancashire and the surrounds) so therefore were able to make their soap opera more believable/plausable

I think east enders went the same way 'dallas' did after the 'bobby in the shower' episode (i.e. down the toilet)

Wow, so what you are saying is that they are getting rid of Eastenders and bringing back BROOKSIDE!

I see no difference between any of the soaps, ALL of their days are numbered, as for Coronation street (most un-realistic drama on TV) being somehow better (or worse) written than Eastenders (the other most un-realistic drama on TV), this is laughable!

Bring back quality TV I say!

End all soaps and crappy reality TV!

If Brookside didn't work, why would the producers of Eastenders think that this would be anymore popular than their current crappy format.

Personally I think it would be a good idea if all soaps started cutting down on the amount of episodes produced. They must think people have nothing better to do than watch television.

I agree Coronation Street has always been a far higher quality production than Eastenders because the storylines are (or used to be) much more realistic. I don't understand how so many characters in the square can be portrayed as 'gangsters'. It seems each one that moves in has some sort of dodgy deal going on. I also wonder why Coronation Street has now moved in 'cockney' characters (personally I hope Danny Baldwin does leave the show as Bradley Walsh seems to come across like a stand-up comedian and not an actor, way over the top).

Coronation Street has always been regarded as a nostalgia soap, and essentially that was always a part of its charm, but there are moves to update it and bring it more into the 21st century. It publicises the same issues but in a much more realistic and friendly way with a greater range of characters who seem to have a genuinely good community spirit. It retains its foremost aim which is that of being entertainment. Long may it reign as King (or should that be Queen???) of the soaps!

Sorry I can not give you a specific answer, but an observation with regard to all soaps, that may give you a different light on the subject.

Soap operas used to be on twice a week, for half an hour.
Then as competition built up between broadcasting company's, they had to go for more air time, and increased the number of episodes each week. This puts more pressure on the writers of the programme, and also the actors who play the parts.

It will eventually lead to total meltdown of the programme.

As a writer, you need to have time to write your script, and as an actor, you need to have time to learn it.

Having spent many years writing scripts, I always liked the time to do research, to ensure a true and lifelike situation with regard to my characters. If your workload is increased five fold, then you just start writing rubbish, having no time left to think about things, and read to your self what you have written, and make amendments.

In past years, programmes went out live, no chance to cover up mistakes, this would be impossible, I think, now, with regard to soaps.

Hope this is of some help to you, from a different point of view.

Although Albert Square isnt a real place you can still visit! I'm not sure how you would go about this but an internet search should be able to help you find out. Its enlightening to know that eastenders is shown in the USA.

Eastenders is the best soap on television, it's veiwers will be outraged if they take it off, we all know that Coronation Street has been on a lot longer, but it's not a patch on Emmerdale, let alone Eastenders.
