I will not repeat again what already people have told about Mahatma Gandhi's background, but I will tell those things for which he is respected even today all over the world.
. Gandhiji could have stayed in big villa and could have dressed in rich garments.......but when he saw poor people of his country he decided that unless and until every person of his country will have clothes to wear , house to live, he will not enjoy any comforts which he had. It takes a real guts to just wear a small piece of cloth to cover body and fight the war of independence.....nobody can do this, but he did inspite of being so much educated and well culture.....because he was the real leader.
Have you ever heard about satyagrah , which means non violence,,,,who can win a battle without violence..........but Gandhiji did.....read the history of war of Independence or India, and you will come to know about such surprising things which you will never find in western history.
I can write a lot on this , but it is all written and you can read it on net.
Gandhiji's famous preaching was"
SIMPLE LIVING AND HIGH THINKING
if people will follow this phrase .....the world will be wonderful place to live.......but alas........we have lost happiness ..........as there will be no second Gandhi again.........

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 - 30 January 1948) was born in Porbandar in the westernmost state of Gujarat in India. His father was Karamchand Gandhi, an advocate and his mother was Putlibai.

In his school life: One day, the British Education Officer gave a dictation to Gandhi and his classmates. Gandhi was the only person who made a mistake. The Officer asked him to copy but he did not.
He married Kasturba Gandhi at the young age of 11.
Outside India: He went to England to study law. Then, he went to South Africa to practise law. He was thrown from a train in South Africa in Pietermaritzburg as he was a brown-skinned person and he was not supposed to sit in the first class due to the social evil of apartheid.
After coming back to India: He became the leader of the Indian Freedom Movement. He made many movements like the bonfire of foreign dresses, Non-cooperation movement , Dandi March and Quit India movement. On 15 August 1947, India became free. But he died very shortly after that. On 30 January 1948, he was assasinated by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu fanatic during a prayer meeting.
He is now called the Father of the nation. All notes have his picture.

Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand

Educated in India and in London, he was admitted to the English bar in 1889 and practiced law unsuccessfully in India for two years. In 1893 he went to South Africa, where he was later joined by his wife and children. There he became a successful lawyer and leader of the Indian community and involved himself in the fight to end discrimination against the country's Indian minority. In South Africa he read widely, drawing inspiration from such sources as the Bhagavad-Gita, John Ruskin, Leo Tolstoy, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau, and his personal philosophy underwent significant changes. He abandoned (c.1905) Western ways and thereafter lived abstemiously (including celibacy); this became symbolized in his eschewal of material possessions and his dress of loincloth and shawl. While in South Africa he organized (1907) his first satyagraha [holding to the truth], a campaign of civil disobedience expressed in nonviolent resistance to what he regarded as unjust laws. So successful were his activities that he secured (1914) an agreement from the South African government that promised the alleviation of anti-Indian discrimination.
