recently i was at a friend's house who's car had trouble starting because of a low battery. When giving him a jump he asked me to hit the gas. Does that have any effect? I can rationalize why it would. Yet i see them do the same on the dodge commercial.

well all it does is makes the alternator go faster in turn this will give more amperage to the charging system.

Yes it does give the battery a boost. So to speak.

If you are jumping a car whose battery is dead or almost dead. You will drain your battery as thats where the stored engery is coming from to charge the other battery. When you step on your gas it kinda like super charges your battery make it get back the lost power going into your friends battery. If his battery is complete dead and gone by not steping on the gas would cause your car to die as thats what keeps it going. Don't beleive me start your car and then disconnect the battery see what happens. It will slow die out or completly stop on you. The reconnect it as it is dying.

BUT BE CAREFULL YOU CAN GET SHOCKED.

Yes, it gives more power to the battery being jumped because the alternator is recharging the battery faster on the car doing the jumping.

The answers you got so far are good.always be careful when jumping a battery they give off explosive gases and can explode if you ark at the battery (sparks). always connect cables at the week or dead battery first.you should use a battery charger when you can because it is a lot of work for an alternator to do and could shorten it's life span

If you jump start another car you are putting extra load onto your alternator. This will cause the engine to slow down so by giving it some gas, you are keeping the engine speed up.

It causes the alternator to charge the battery more than if it was just idling. It's actually quite a good boost.
