Should helmets be made compulsory ?

On BN we have our group policy which is :"no helmets, no rides". I don't want someone to die on a ride due to a head injury because he was stupid enough not to care about his head. Remember - if you ride, you will fall. No way out. Realize the risks and make sure you make them as less as possible.

OTOH, on a darker note, it would probably do us good cause as per the Darwin principle it will be survival of the fittest. So, people who dont care about their heads would probably just vanish from this earth.

Before you start bashing me, I have had 2 major falls from my bike. First time my head (with helmet ) had hit the divider. Without the helmet I would have been probably only a memory. The second time the helmet prevented my chin from being split open.

I have seen a road accident. It was a middle aged man who had an accident while riding his splendor. He was lying in the middle of his road. His brain had spilled out. Just thinking about it gives me the creeps. And it was all senseless. It would not have happened if he had the sense to wear a helmet.

Now, it is up to you how you want to decorate your head. With your skin and hair, or with your blood.

In many countries helmets are compulsory Motorcycle accessories, but I know that in countries I have visited especially Tropical Caribbean and Latin American countries, you will see people whom are on Motorcycles and not wearing any headgear at all. I have actually seen evidence of an accident where a motorcyclist collided with the tail end of a truck and also a high speed side impact with a Bus, where in both cases, the helmet did not protect the riders, they died from horrible head injuries, so the right type of Helmet is important.

No, I don't think it should be. The trouble with common sense is that it's not very common anymore.

Everyone should have the choice of whether or not to wear one, but the ones that die from not doing so should NOT have any recompense against the state, the other driver(s) or anyone else.

If you choose not to protect yourself, you choose to risk your own life and no one else should be held responsible for anything that happens to you. No helmet = no fault but your own. But forcing EVERYONE to conform to a law just because of the lowest common denominators is not freedom, it's martial law.

The excuses of why not are pretty lame, and about as realistic as the "loud pipes save lives" crap. Diminished field of view? Horse shite! You ride down the road and NEVER turn your head? Come on, now! And shielding yourself from constant 110dB wind noise will SAVE your hearing, pal. In fact, I started wearing earplugs when I ride, and to my surprise I can hear MORE of the important sounds because they're not drowned out by wind.

I personally wear a full face helmet EVERY time I ride, hot or cold, rain or shine. I'd rather sweat than bleed, and I know from personal experience that helmets do their job as intended.

personally i could care less if you want to ride without a helmet but If you chose to do so then you must accept full responsibility if you get a head injury. Even if the accident is not your fault. the reason I say this is the rest of us riders that wear our full face helmets are going to have our insurance rates go up to compensate for your stupidity

The sun broke through the clouds with a deep orange glow outlining long dark shadows through the length of the road. I glanced westward down the street from the edge of the crosswalk waiting fervently for the signal to cross. Out of the edge of my vision i notice a white object flashing. Assuming it was the go ahead signal from the machine across street i started walking without giving much thought to the slight drop from the sidewalk to the road. One instant I'm enjoying the orange tint that has engulfed the entire road before i find myself experiencing that inexplicable feeling when your feet haven't touched the ground yet you still shift your weight forward expecting some support and the next instant your planting your face into the asphalt. Needless to say I suffered horrendous injuries; a broken eye, a loose ear, I lost my smelling sense, and my nose turned inside pointing towards the back of my head! I have never felt such pain. I hope my worst enemy does not have to go through an ounce of what i suffered. That's why I propose that anyone who goes outside must wear a full face helmet. Think of the injuries that could have been prevented if i had worn full face helmet! I've proposed a law requiring all citizens wear mandatory head protection when walking outside. Honestly. Its for the best and you know it!. Yet , some people argue against full face helmets. whats wrong with them!! Don't they know its for their own good!. They're idiots. walking outside without full face helmets. they talk about personal choice and freedom. Meaningless, when it comes to your safety. Everybody knows if its made into a law then its good for you. Yet why do they resist. Insurance rates would be much lower than they are now if we all wore helmets while being outside. What is wrong with this country?

You have probably never seen an accident involving a two wheeler rider. Had you seen it, you wont be asking such a question. Remember, authorities dont get anything out of it, its for one's own safety. However, its only a precaution and it cannot complement rash and negligent driving/riding.

I would suggest you to wear proper headgear (helmets), keep your vehicle in good condition and follow the traffic rules. It always helps. And yes, dont forget to ENJOY life!

GOOD LUCK....

depends on if you mean a motrocycle or a pedal bike. in the uk a helmet is compulsary for motorbikes. the pedal bike one has been debated for so long. i have both and i never wear a helmet on my pedal bike. i have fallen off that many times but never hit my head. it might be a good idea as it would stop all the stigma attached to wearing one and they do help save lives but whether it gets made into a law we shall have to see

NO, most people seem to think helmets are perfect. about half the people that die in motorcycle accidents ARE wearing a helmet.

Not only compulsory but be mandatory. As one does not go out without air in his tyres or fuel in his 2-Wheeler's tank so he should not drive his vehicle without helmet. The pillion rider also must wear it.
Head is the most sensetive part of our body it get hurt and damaged easily even in case of minor accidents. And for the rest of the life a man can be doomed.
