Every one knows frequent use of the clutch increases fuel consumption. Whats the reason? Isint it the other way round because using the clutch disengages the pressure plate from the clutch plate thus reducing load on the engine, inturn increasing fuel economy??

I think using the clutch to change gears at the right time will save you fuel.
Fuel consumption is kilometre specific ,when you disengage clutch the load on the engine will reduce but your vehicle is not doing any positive work, which is not the idea. Therefore You cannot keep disengaging the clutch hoping to get a better fuel consumption.

Frequent use of clutch not only spoils clutch plates but also increases fuel consumption

this same question had me thinkin4 a while...

1st thin....ur clutch plates get seriously damaged coz ur
"RIDIN THE CLUTCH"...look this term up google...

Well ur rite...
using the clutch disengages the pressure plate from the clutch plate...
but remember ur engine is still running...and hence the load on the engine is more...than when u utilize it to run in higher gears..
(because it is idling when the vehicle is moving)

Wat u r sayin will work...if u switch ur car off and shift the gear to Neutral down a slope...
but then again you will exhaust fuel once you turn on your engine and run in low gear...

The best gas mileage occurs at 45, driving straight.

RPM changes, gas pedal movements, and pretty much anything else, reduces gas mileage.

Even pushing in the clutch means the car is consuming gas (still) but not applying that energy to forward movement.

Everytime you change gear the engine works to make up revs again, uses fuel. Less changes, less fuel. Higher gear, less revs, less fuel.
