If you really want to learn to play you should get yourself a classical guitar with nylon strings and learn how to play your basic chords (a,b,c,d,e,f,g) first. I suggest a classical guitar because the strings are easier to work with for a beginner and their easier on the fingers. Your fingers will hurt at first, but they'll get stronger and more callused. Plus the classical guitar usually has a wider fret board so the strings set apart a little more. It really helps for learning how to adjust your fingers to form the chords. Go to a music store and get yourself the basic beginner's book for guitar. Take it home and learn how to play everything in it. Get a instructional dvd and learn everything on that.
See, once you learn how to play your basic chords, everything else will start to fall into place. A lot of the time you won't hear the song your learning at first, but then it will click and you won't have that problem again.
So, get a guitar first, learn the chords next and then unleash your talents on the world and change the face of music forever. I know that sounds cheesy, but I'm serious as hell..........

If you prefer a relatively inexpensive way to understand guitar from home, downloadable guitar lessons really are a easy and clear choice but also for decades, Jamorama, https://tr.im/dy6bB is a huge front-runner in that industry, providing quality media guitar instruction that you can get to your computer.
Jamorama offers a good assortment of classes and is certainly a good select for a start guitarist. Jamorama's video material is all in great HD quality, and their main instructor, Mark McKenzie, does a congrats covering the basic principles within an easy-to-understand and intuitive way.
