The common chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes, is the closest living relative of humans, Homo sapiens. Chimpanzees and human beings share some of the same biochemical characteristics, including the number and form of chromosomes, the blood proteins and immune responses, and the structure of our DNA. The chimpanzee brain is more like the human brain than that of any other living creature.

Chimpanzee communities number from 20 to 105 apes, but group members will wander alone or in small parties searching for food.

In the wild, chimpanzees range across equatorial Africa. They typically live in large social groups. Young chimpanzees live with family members for many years, learning the skills necessary for survival. They form life-long relationships and can suffer from depression when a loved one is lost. They communicate with a vast range of sounds as well as through body language. Chimpanzees make and use tools, and can solve problems. Altruistic acts are not uncommon, particularly within families, but chimpanzees are also capable of being deceptive in order to gain access to something they want.

The average male chimpanzee is approximately four times stronger than the average human male. Unlike the cute and playful pranksters they depict in the entertainment world, chimpanzees do not willingly cooperate with their "trainers," and are typically subjected to physical abuse in order to make them perform. Chimps over 5 years old become dangerous, and most at that age are "retired" to other uses, like research or breeding for entertainment purposes.

It depends what you mean. There are two species of chimpanzee: the "common chimpanzee" (Pan troglodytes) and the bonobo (Pan paniscus) which used to be known as the "pygmy chimpanzee". However, it is also worth noting that there 4 subspecies of the common chimpanzees that are distinctive including the western chimpanzee (P.t. verus), the central chimpanzee (P.t. troglodytes), the eastern chimpanzee (P.t. schweinfurthii), and the Nigerian chimpanzee (P.t. vellerosus). Each occupy a specific range of African and are further distiquished by different behavior patterns and cultural traditions.
