A.D. means 'after Christ', so this year is 2006 A.D

A.D. = Anno Domini is Latin and means in the year of Our Lord.

You've been told what 'AD' means, but I have to disagree with pioneer when it is said that 'BCE' stands for 'Before Christian Era'. It doesn't, but stands for 'Before COMMON Era'. It was invented in order that the same numbering that we are used to in the West with BC and AD can be used, but without a religious connotation.
