As a former journalist and reader of womens' magazines, I would say that there is a lot of superficiality in all magazines but having been in the position to read a lot of readers' feedback, this can be a sort of lifeline for some women. Articles often inspire women to take action or make changes to their lives, eg reading about Kylie Minogue having breast cancer made some women go and get their lumps examined. Yes, it may seem silly to some people but to others it means the world. I think there are a lot of informative articles in certain magazines. My favourite is Cosmopolitan as there is a balance of everything. They speak to politicians, they tell you about scams, they warn you of new date-rape drugs and they also have the usual sex and fashion features.

As a journalist - I've read pretty much every magazine on the market.

I think some are quite dissapointing editorially but the following are worth a look:
Eve magazine
Red magazine
Vogue for features
Marie-Claire for features
Easy Living
In-Style (great fashion tips)

if you're after pure picture gratification indulge in:
Hello
OK
HEAT
NOW

If you want to read girly crap with dodgy advice go for the likes of
New Women
Cosmopolitan

Hope that helps?

I read Cosmo the other day and it had several articles where the tone of the piece was that all girlfriends should be demanding, high maintenance and clingy which is totally ridiculous! Then theres the magazines that have a good piece about normal body image and self confidence and such but then have a page where they slag off celebrities flaws, which to me seems rather hypocritical! And what often gets to me is how they base everything on sex, they have articles on sex, things to buy which make you more sexy, its all about sex now! I'm not saying that it isnt important but I think there are way more important things out there that should be discussed I think you have to take most of them with a bucket load of salt, they are out to sell at the end of the day!

The lot of them are undoubtedly rubbish. The only ones that have the tiniest morsel of substance are B.itch, Marie Claire, and Vogue (and even those are sketchy).

Most women's magazines are both ironic and hypocritical-- they follow mindless trends and exploit women within their pages, yet they claim femininity and power.

I stopped reading them when they turned into what looked like mail order catalogues ie. full of advertisements. I must say that they are good for people learning a foreign language as they have short articles which may be used as translation texts. I used to teach Spanish and often got hold of second-hand magazines for this purpose.

Have you ever read Grazia, what a load of tripe!.

They are full of rubbish about slimming, fashion and "true life stories" that are usually about how bad men are, or how a woman has found the man of her dreams after being treated badly by another man.

Either way they are total contrived rubbish.

It seems to me that the media have forgotten that women have brains too! Its about time they marketed a magazine at real women and not the imaginary brain dead stick insects they believe exist....
