The spirit goes back to God that gave it!(Eccles.12:7; Psalm 146:4).

The question of death is closely tied to creation. How were we created? GEN.2:7
"AND THE LORD GOD FORMED MAN OF THE DUST OF THE GROUND, AND BREATHED INTO HIS NOSTRILS THE BREATH OF LIFE, AND MAN BECAME A LIVING BEING."

The Bible does not teach that God placed a soul in us at creation. It specifically states that God formed man(body) out of the dust of the ground, and breathed into him the breath of life, and man became a living soul(person or being).

Equation Form, body+breath= living soul.

Is the soul mortal or immortal? EZEK.18:4
"BEHOLD, ARE SOULS ARE MINE; THE SOUL OF THE FATHER AS WELL AS THE SOUL OF THE SON IS MINE; THE SOUL WHO SINS SHALL DIE."

"Mortal" means subject to death.
"Immortal" means not subject to death, imperishable.

Who only has immortality? 1TIM.6:15
",,,HE WHO IS THE BLESSED AND ONLY PONTENTATE, THE KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS, WHO ALONE HAS IMMORTALITY, DWELLING IN UNAPPROACHABLE LIGHT, WHOM NO MAN HAS SEEN OR CAN SEE, TO WHOM BE HONOR AND EVERLASTING POWER. AMEN."

Actually when people die; they're asleep in the grave. Death is called a sleep (Matt.9:24; John 11:11; 1Cor.15:51; 1Thess.5:10).
The spirit goes back to God that gave it!(Eccles.12:7; Psalm 146:4).
No man is in heaven except for Jesus--JOHN 3:13; ACTS 2:34.
------------------------------...
The Bible describes three hells.

SHEOL OR HADES, THE FIRST HELL
The first term in Greek and Hebrew means the grave. It's the grave where the dead await the resurrection.
GENESIS 37:35---I SHALL GO DOWN INTO THE GRAVE.
PROVERBS 15:11--HELL & DESTRUCTION ARE BEFORE THE LORD.
ECCLES.9:10---NO WORK...OR KNOWLEDGE...IN THE GRAVE,
MATT.11:23---WILL BE BROUGHT DOWN TO HADES
1COR.15:55---O HADES, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY

GEHENNA, THE SECOND HELL
The second term in New Testament means the place of fiery destruction of the wicked.
MATT.5:22--...BE IN DANGER OF HELL FIRE
MATT.10:28--TO DESTROY BOTH BODY AND SOUL IN HELL

TARTAROO, THE THIRD HELL
This third term is only used once and refers to the place of restraint where the demon spirits were placed following the rebellion against God.
2PETER 2:4---BUT CAST THEM DOWN TO HELL.

THE THREE HEAVENS
There's 3 heavens.

First Heaven = This is also called the firmament or expanse of heaven. It is the heaven where the birds fly and where the clouds give rain. (Gen.1:26; 2:20; 8:2 & 1Kings 18:45)

Second Heaven = This refers to outerspace where the sun, moon and stars can be found. (Gen.22:17 & Exodus 32:13 & Joshua 10:13)

Third Heaven = The Apostle Paul tells us that the heaven of God's abode is the "third heaven." In the Old Testament this is often designated by the phrase "the heaven of heavens." (Joshua 2:11 & Psalms 11:4 & 2Corinthians 12:2 equated with v.4 = paradise)

THERE ARE TWO KINGDOMS: ONE ON EARTH AND THE OTHER ONE COMING DOWN FROM HEAVEN.

The 1st Kingdom of Heaven =
DAN.7:27 = "AND THE KINGDOM AND DOMINION, AND THE GREATNESS OF THE KINGDOM UNDER THE WHOLE HEAVEN, SHALL BE GIVEN TO THE PEOPLE OF THE SAINTS OF THE MOST HIGH, WHOSE KINGDOM IS AN EVERLASTING KINGDOM, AND ALL DOMINION SHALL SERVE AND OBEY HIM."
REV.5:10 = "AND HAST MADE US UNTO OUR GOD KINGS AND PRIESTS: AND WE SHALL REIGN ON THE EARTH."

The 2nd kingdom of Heaven =
AFTER 1,000 YEARS = A NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH-HOLY CITY COMING DOWN FROM HEAVEN = REV.21:1-4; ISAIAH 65:17-25; 66:1,22 AND ETC.

SO HERE'S WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO---
ISAIAH 66:21; ZECH.14:9-11 = "BUILD HOUSES, PLANT VINEYARDS, EAT VINEYARDS"
ISAIAH 66:23; ZECH.14:16-19 = "WORSHIP FROM ONE NEW MOON TO ANOTHER AS ONE SABBATH TO ANOTHER"
JESUS WILL BE GIVING CITIES TO THE SAINTS INWHICH THEY WILL BE TEACHING OTHERS THE TRUE MESSAGE OF THE BIBLE = MATT.25:14-23; EZEKIEL 36:10,33; LUKE 13:26; ISAIAH 61:4
WE WON'T MARRY OR BE GIVEN UNTO MARRIAGE = MATT.22:30
BOYS AND GIRLS WILL BE PLAYING IN THE STREETS = ZECHARIAH 8:4-5,8
MEEK SHALL INHERIT THE EARTH = PSALM 37:9-11; MATT.5:5; REV.5:10

my ftaher had a terminal illness. In his last few days on morphine he watched the clock. He was talking about his broher who had died 60 years befor. He spoke of his mother also. The day he died he watched the clock and the doorway and was aiting. At 5.00 he died and my sister heard this and said toherself "poor dad hat will happen to him" a clear reply was recieved dont worry we have him. All the family had experiences where he communicated after he died . to all family members all over the world. Two years later around his aniversary I was walking in a supermarket when his urge to go to the advertisement wall (where people advertise things that are for sale or lost or found etc. On the wall was a lost dog called "hello lou lou" dads pet name for me is lou lou. I believe dad is in his own form of heaven. He is there with the people ho loves andcares for. So where do spiritys go - they go somewhere and if outer space is there heaven like thign then maybe but not all.

Reason for all the confusion is because we use the physical life as a 'measuring instrument' to understand wholistic life.
The terms - my spirit, or your soul - kind of alienates 'you' from the soul. If your soul goes to heaven, then who are you.
The terminology gets us confused. We don't possess a soul because we are soul. Paying too much attention on our outer garment (physical body) we have forgotten ours true essence. Yes, as Soul, we have a body, emotions and a mind.

Another thing is about going somewhere. Only the temporary physical body leaves and goes places. The real is the unchangeable, never leaves because it is part of God. God is everywhere and so is Soul or individual souls.

The term Soul Travel is another misleading theory.

Ignoring the non secular element of the question and taking a extreme seem at it.... No, because of the fact a spirit is the essence of somebody, the potential that makes one up. If the spirit have been to die then the guy could quickly, if no longer at the instant, persist with.

Undrstand the concept of death and all would be clear!

Death has always been the most dreaded factor of life for any living being. It is not only the humans who are afraid of death... animals and other forms of life also feel the same!

What makes death the most fearful of all attributes of God? There is none who can defy death. It is only after gaining self realization and enlightenment that one becomes immortal. It is this stage when the fear of death vanishes for ever. Every God realized Master and an enlightened individual finally overcomes death.

What is to death that is feared about most? Death announces the end of the physical manifested journey on Mother Earth. Whatever be the achievements of an individual in any phase of life... be it the form of an insect, animal or the human being himself... all seems to have gone wasted!

After the death of the body... none remembers what the next manifestation would be! For the present being all is lost after the death of the body. The entity for which it lived all through in the present life seems to be lost forever the moment the death of the body occurs.

The achievements in the present life... do they carry no value. Why does not God Almighty show mercy on human beings and increase their life span proportionate to their achievements in the physical manifested life.

It is a remote possibility that such an arrangement may have worked. Probably God Almighty did not have able advisers. People of the level of Edison and Einstein may have continued living for thousands of years. In doing so they would have immensely benefited the mankind and for God there was nothing to lose. But so was not destined by God. Why?

Why is it so that death makes an uninteresting subject! We may have labored for a full 30~35 years... the primetime of our life having spent in creating an enormous wealth. But when comes the time for death of the body... All shall be left behind. Why?

In the system of God... nothing seems to be disordered or incomplete. Stephen Hawking in his book "a Brief History of Time" has advocated that the system of God is disordered at some stage. He is absolutely in the wrong. He is trying to place his judgments based on science. There are many factors in the field of spirituality which are purely based upon faith.

The conclusions of Stephen Hawking were wrong for the complete cosmic system is without a parallel. It has no flaws... such a phenomenon can never be! Everything in the whole of Cosmos is governed by laws which are a creation of the Creator himself. More on concept of death here- http://www.godrealized.com/Death.html

The 'spirit' or 'soul' is something that people have invented who cannot, or will not, comprehend the idea of mortality. So let's get this one straight...what happens when you die ? Answer....nothing happens, because as far as you are concerned it is over. To understand this, think of a life form like a piece of grass. You pluck it out of the ground root and all and throw it on the fire. It burns and ceases to exist in the way we know it. It is gone and we accept this and, unless we are crazy buddhists, we do not believe the life force has gone to a bigger and better world where nasty human beings do not throw little innocent blades of grass on fires. I do not believe that one life form is any different from the other. If you want you can believe what you want and pick the tale out of any book of fairy stories you like......The Koran, The Bible, Hans Christian Anderson, Brothers Grimm, Superman comics .....there are plenty to choose from and they will all present you with an image of your imaginary future you will never experience.

Spirit go to one of two places :
1st place a place for Good Spirits
2nd place for bad spirits
these 2 places are temporary places , The spirits stay there till the Judgment day when GOD Meet every one's spirit and see its works when it was living on earth , so the spirit after that go to its final place , Kingdom of Heaven to live with GOD or the other place which is too bad .
And this is the final place for the spirit

Luke 23:43 - Jesus said to the thief on the cross “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” So Jesus went immediately to Paradise when he died

Matthew 16:18 Jesus promised “…I will build my church and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.” Hades is seen as a type of prison. That means that those in Hades are not free to leave at will. A dead person cannot return to life by his own will power. Imagine Hades as a place with doors to enter and to leave, but the exit door or gate was closed. Jesus promised that the doors of Hades would not prevail against the church (the saved people). If today, the gates of Hades do not prevail against the church, then the church is not held bound or prisoner there. Christians who pass on are not held captive in the place of the dead. When Jesus left Hades on the third day, he left the exit doors open on the good side of Hades (Paradise).
Jesus promised that those who live and believe in him would never die. (John 11: 25,26). Since the resurrection, those who live and believe in Jesus don’t die! Even though their physical bodies quit working and have to be discarded, their souls or spirits do not go to the place of the dead (Hades) but go directly to Heaven to be with the Christ who declared, “I am the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6).

many interesting answers here. personally believe that a mortal has three parts -- the physical -- the soul -- the spirit --. when one dies the physical " container " returns to the earth where it will replenish Her. the soul will return to GOD who gave it if the person was good ( if evil then the soul will go to hell which is a separation from GOD ) and the spirit is the essence which remains behind in the hearts and minds of those still on this plane who were fortunate ( or
unfortunate ) enough to know the deceased person.

It is possible that the Spirit, once released from the physical body, is free to travel where it wants. No one in this life can know that for certain but if you are interested in reading a story of one of my experiances you can view it at http:www.tsoham.info/index_files/chhang.htm

my spirit is going to go to a place where some absolutely amazing being (not yet mentioned or known on planet Earth) is going to explain the secrets of the cosmos. It's going to tell my spirit (me) whether dimensions can really exist inside spaces smaller than subatomic particles themselves. It's going to tell me if anything can defy causality. Then it's going to tell me who shot JFK and whether or not extraterrestial beings exist. After that, it is going to teach me canine speak or it's going to teach my chihuahua how to speak English. It is going to love me enough to let me see my mommie and all the other loved ones I've lost along the way. Then we're going to all sit down and eat ice cream (I couldn't resist the South Park reference).
