The term Third World was coined in the 1960's. Originally...
First World nations were non-communist, industrially & economically developed countries like the USA, UK, and Japan.
Second World nations were the communist, industrially & economically developed countries like the U.S.S.R.
Third World nations are the non-communist industrially & economically undeveloped nations.
Fourth World nations were the communist industrially & economically undeveloped countries.
Over time, the term "Third World" evolved to mean the poorer countries of the world.
The terms had nothing to do with geography or race.

Just some corrections here: Taiwan is a High INcome country like the U.S, W. Europe, Singapore, Japan, S. Korea etc. Malaysia is a Middle Income country, Indonesia is considered to be a Lower Middle Income country while the Phillipines, Vietnam, Cambodia, India are Low Income countries. China is an Upper Low income country and definetely is NOT a third world nation. Third world nations are Haiti, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Congo, Somalia. and Haiti is the poorest country in the world. What country are you from? Many people from High Income countries think that most of the world are third world nations. But there're only a few of them. Communist countries are NOT third world nations either.

First world countries are industrially developed with socio economic conditions like the USA, UK, Japan and most European countries.
Second world countries are those which are developing in the areas of Industries and economic stability and those which has a good and promising future to be termed as First world nations and they are India, China, Korea, Iran and some Middle east countries.
Third world countries include those which still have a long way to grow economically as well as industrially and in terms of social reltaions and these include most Asian and African countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Phillipines, Indonesia, Ghana, Uganda, Somalia, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Pakistan..etc
