they are caused by a bacteria (candida albicans) that is normally present in and around a woman's privates. It is normally kept in check by so-called "good" bacteria. A change in vaginal environment can cause the CA bacteria to multiply rapidly. Lots of things can cause this (a change in PH, injury, sexually transmitted diseases, diet, plan old poor hygiene - dirty drawers - etc) but the primary cause is the use of antibiotics, which tend to wipe out the good guys in the crotch along with whatever bad guys they were prescribed to get rid of.
Treatment typically consists of topical application of an anti fungal (there are several), maintaining good hygiene, and eating anti-oxidents and other stuff that helps your immune system. My ex-wife swore by packing herself with plain yogurt.
She was my source for this info, too.

sounds like a urinary tracht infection. classic symptoms! drink lots of water and have a glass of cranberry juice every day, my urologist told me i could never take tub baths again ,so i am committed to only have showers. guess what? i havent had any more infections. a yeast infection is very uncomfortable as you have severe vaginal itching and a white discharge. you dont usually get this unless you are sexually active. if your symptons dont clear up you need to re-visit the doctor. sometimes they put you on an anti-biotic that is called broad spectrum until they get the results back from the lab, then they will know exactly which medication will work. hope this helps you till you see your doctor.

an overabundance of yeast in the body. diabetics with high blood glucose levels are very prone to constant yeast infections. some women are yeast intolorant, and have to reduce the amount of yeast in their diets. some yeast infections are sexually transmitted. the vagina is like an oven...it is the perfect temperature for growing yeast, if the other conditions are also present. do a google search for more in-depth info.
