An alter ego is a persona. How could you love a psychological construct? You love your alter ego to protect you from being hurt.
Being cynical helps you deal with some underlying, unresolved issue. Talk to someone.

I vote for your alter ego. He knows your many faults, doesn't care that your reflection is a bit distorted, pretends to believe the lies you tell yourself, and always says what you want to hear. Most of all it will keep innocent men from falling victim to another dramatic princess who never was.

Skip the alter ego, go for the reflection in the mirror. It worked wonders for Narcissus. Hell, he's famous now.
